Stupid Punt: Your craziest bets in the Premier League this weekend

Knowledge, experience, a whole heap of courage and a sprinkling of luck. That's the recipe to enter our Punting Hall of Fame, and these three bets have the lot

by Josh Powell | November 7, 2013

It takes a serious amount of skill and balls to enter our Punting Hall of Fame, but when you do the honour, respect and admiration of your peers is enough to make it all worth while. You’ve probably also got a healthy wad of cash to spend at the weekend because of it, so that’s not too shabby either.

Three punters made their way in last week with a whopping shout of Manchester City to win 7-0 with Sergio Aguero to score the opener. A brilliant call which benefited from a little help from Paddy Power and a monumental collapse from Norwich.

The Stupid Punt celebrates Premier League punters who take a risk at huge odds and could potentially come out a few grand richer.

Here are three of the more outlandish bets in the book for this weekend’s games and some stats that try to back them up.

Scorecast: Dimitar Berbatov to score and Fulham to beat Liverpool 1-0
One punter is on at 250/1

  • Fulham have beaten Liverpool 1-0 at Anfield once before, in May 2012 when a Martin Skrtel own goal decided the match
  • Dimitar Berbatov has scored four goals in 14 matches against Liverpool
  • Liverpool haven’t lost back-to-back home games since April 2012

It’s a tough ask for anybody to get anything from Anfield with Liverpool’s current form, and it doesn’t help when you’re as reliable on the road as a 20-year-old Renault Clio. This year Fulham have lost all three of thier away games against top half sides and this punter will be hoping they can buck the trend courtesy of a strike from Berbatov.

Scorecast: West Brom to beat Chelsea 2-1, and Jonas Olsson to score first
One punter is on at 425/1

  • The last time West Brom beat Chelsea away in the league was September 1978
  • Jonas Olsson has not scored since February 2012, in a 5-1 win away to Wolves
  • Jose Mourinho has lost back-to-back league games with Chelsea once before, when both Blackburn and Newcastle won in May 2006

The Special One does not lose two league games on the spin very often, but eagle-eyed punters will notice that Newcastle were involved last time this rare event happened. Is that a sign? Maybe. It probably isn’t any indication that Jonas Olsson is going to break his goal scoring drought though, making this a Stupid Punt.

Scorecast: Arsenal to beat Man Utd 5-0 and Olivier Giroud to score first
One punter has £1 on at 1750/1

  • Arsenal have beaten Manchester United 5-0 once before – all the way back in January 1937 in an FA Cup tie
  • Olivier Giroud has scored first in four of Arsenal’s 10 league games this season
  • The last time Manchester United lost 5-0 at home in the league was in February 1955 – Manchester City were the winners on that occasion

Arsenal and Manchester United are no strangers to high scoring games – we’ve had an 8-2, a 4-2 and 6-1 in the last 12 years. But this punt is a little bit different. Arsenal haven’t won at Old Trafford since 2006 and have lost eight of the last nine games at the Theatre of Dreams. Giroud has gone off the boil since his explosive start to the season and Manchester United have never been beaten more than 1-0 by Arsenal at home in Premier League history.

It’s pretty much unthinkable that David Moyes’ team could get beaten 5-0 this weekend. Isn’t it?
