World Cup 2014 complete fixture guide: Can anyone stop Brazil?

by Paul Mallon | December 6, 2013

Brazil are 10/3 favourites to lift the World Cup after a relatively straight-forward draw for the hosts. Neighbours Argentina have shot into being second favourites at 5/1.

The main talking point of the draw on Friday in the Costa do Sauipe, Brazil was co-host Fernanda Lima (below) which certainly got Twitter’s knickers in a twist. Yes, but can she do it on a cold night in Dundalk?

Brazil and Argentina avoided strong European opposition. However, Argentina could have an easier second stage match. And, given their group opponents of Iran, Nigeria and Bosnia-Herzegovina, the world’s greatest player, Lionel Messi, is a clear 9/1 favourite to be top scorer in the tournament. Cristiano Ronaldo is 14/1 second favourite along with home-nation preener Neymar.

Before Friday, England were 22/1 to pick up the trophy but after a tough draw Roy Hodgson’s men have slipped to 25/1 in the outright betting, despite a BBC poll hyping their chances. England face Italy in their first game in the early hours, in the Amazonian climate of Manaus.

Steven Gerrard and co then head to Sao Paulo to face Luis Suarez and his Uruguay before finishing the group in Belo Horizonte against Costa Rica, who finished second in their qualifying process.

The ‘Group of Death’ compromises Germany, Portugal, Ghana and the USA, leading to Joachim Low’s side slipping to 11/2 to win the tournament. Behind Germany at 7/1 are Spain who got a tricky draw against the Netherlands, Chile and Australia. Hang on. Spain. 7/1. There’s got to be some debate on that. Multiple champions and general footballing gods, and all that.

A Paddy Power spokesman said: “Things did not quite go to plan for the Three Lions with their first game scheduled against heavyweights Italy in the Brazilian jungle. Adding a star to that kit looks less likely than 24 hours ago but progression could see them face a relatively simple second round match up. The six-month countdown to a heroic quarter final exit begins here!”

The Blog’s 50p is on Brazil but for value Argentina at 5s is as good as it gets right now. As for Twitter, here’s some of the reaction and where your money is going so far…

Bring it on, boyos…
