Before the weekend Hull had scored just 16 goals all season – an average of 0.89 goals a game (whatever 0.89 of a goal is?) – and until yesterday the last time they had scored six goals in front of their home fans was in 2004. In a League One game. Against Tranmere.
Consequently backing the Tigers to thump Fulham 6-0 in the middle of a hectic Christmas schedule was either inspired genius or the result of a deadly combination of Milk Tray and alcohol.
Either way the result for Steve Bruce’s side not only lifted them into the top half of the table, but it gave two lucky punters the finest seats in our Punting Hall of Fame.
The 6-0 scoreline was an eye-watering 500/1 shot, but the odds of this Stupid Punt clicking didn’t put off two Paddy Power customers.
It looked unlikely at half time, but six goals in 35 minutes after the break put a healthy wad of cash in their back pockets and ensures 2013 ends on a high note.
Ahmed El Mohamady scored his first goal in 16 games to start the rout, but unsurprisingly nobody had backed the scorecast which would have paid out at 2500/1. A saving grace for the boss who almost choked on the last of the Quality Street when Robert Koren bagged Hull’s sixth.
