Matt Chapman exclusive: Four Saturday TV tips from Ascot and Haydock Park

Matt's New Year's resolution was to pick more winners. But like most broken promises he's vowed to try harder. Starting today.

by Matt Chapman | January 17, 2014

A wise owl once whispered to me don’t worry about the odd losing run, it simply means the winning run is around the corner. With that in mind I’m all set to make Paddy pay this weekend. You hear me Paddy?

Let’s start at Haydock, where import UN TEMPS POUR TOUT (2.05) will hopefully smash out in front and make all the running. He loves heavy ground and was beaten by the classy Ptit Zig (runs in the 2.40 here) at Auteuil last time. There are plenty of promising horses here, but our selection could be a fine prospect.

The Champion Hurdle trial at the same track will have no relevance to Cheltenham in March, but it gives the chance for MELODIC RENDEZVOUS (2.40) to get back in the winning habit. He was stuffed when below par behind My Tent or Yours at Newcastle, but he can bounce back here getting 4lb from Ptit Zig.

Smash into the Sire

Meanwhile at Ascot,  simply smash into SIRE DE GRUGY (3.35) He’s beaten most of these recently and is rated 14lb superior to Hidden Cyclone. The betting is bonkers between those two and Somersby has already been hammered by Sire de Grugy once this season.

In the earlier 2m 3f handicap hurdle – I like the look of MINELLA FORFITNESS (2.25)He has a big weight to hump first time out, but he stays well, goes in the ground and likes the track. He may prove a tasty each-way selection.

So after a quiet spell we are all set to do battle. I’ve got angry about recent results – don’t mess with me Paddy! Yeeehaaa!
