Drinking from the cup of crazy: The punters backing West Ham to make the Capital One Cup Final

What do you mean tonight's match is a dead rubber? These punters disagree...

by Josh Powell | January 21, 2014

The Capital One Cup semi-final second leg between West Ham and Manchester City is as close to a dead rubber as you’re going to get.

City performed their usual act of destroying teams at the Etihad by smashing six past the hopeless Hammers in the first leg meaning it would be a miracle, up there with the likes of Lazarus, if Sam Allardyce’s men make the Wembley Final.

The unlikeliness of a comeback masterminded by Big Sam hasn’t put punters off the attractive odds around West Ham however. After all football is a little crazy and these are the kind of bets that happen when you’ve spent the last week binging on the left over Christmas selection boxes.

West Ham to win 7-0: 500/1

10 punters have backed West Ham to beat Manchester City 7-0 and compete one of the biggest Capital One semi-final comebacks in history. It is unlikely but City have been thrashed in the cup before – losing 8-0 away to Birmingham in April 1896. 118 years later and that kind of result would see the Hammers heading to Wembley.

West Ham to win 6-0: 500/1

The odds suggest this scoreline is equally unlikely but seven punters have backed the result which would see us head into extra time. To show the clear effects of being blinded by confidence one punter has stuck £10 on this correct score – the type of bet that deserves a place in Stupid Punt.

West Ham to qualify in extra time: 500/1

That 6-0 result would inevitably mean extra-time with the possibility of spot-kicks to decide the inevitable winner. Four punters have backed West Ham to finish off Manuel Pellegrini’s side in the 30 extra minutes and two punters fancy West Ham to take it all the way to penalties before securing their tickets to Wembley.

Andy Carrol to score first and
West Ham to win 5-0: 2250/1

Just in case West Ham come agonisingly close to knocking Man City out, one punter has backed them to win 5-0. Not only that, but they have put it in a scorecast bet with Andy Carroll to break the deadlock. That’s £3 on a 2250/1 shot to potentially return £6753. Not bad until you consider the likelihood of West Ham beating anyone 5-0, plus Carroll scoring his first goal for nine months.

Although his last goal did come against City…
