Matt Chapman exclusive: Four Saturday bets to leave Paddy on the ropes

by Matt Chapman | February 14, 2014

Aintree Grand National

Speaking of the Grand National, the weights were revealed this week in what is at this stage a very open event for the world’s most famous horse race where Paddy is paying 1/4 the odds the first 5 home.

If you fancy an ante-post wager to upset Paddy come April, then why not chuck a few quid at TEAFORTHREE, who was third last year off a mark of 151 but can try again off 149. He will be specially prepared for the race and has every chance once again.

It’s another big weekend and with Cheltenham not far off I’m just a little jiggy. Hope you were as well as you enjoyed Valentine’s Day – but there is no love when it comes to taking money off Paddy.

You hear me Paddy? Yeeehaaa!

Fingers crossed late downpours don’t scupper Ascot and Haydock this weekend. There are some tasty wages to be had as we get a bit of Paddy Power cash in the satchel pre-Cheltenham.

All being well I will be at Ascot, and the big race is the Ascot Chase at 3.50pm. I am confident CAPTAIN CHRIS will win this and notch up a third career Grade 1 following his successes in the Arkle and at Punchestown. The distance is perfect after his fine victory at Kempton last time. While we won’t get rich, a winner is a winner.

I also like the look of chasing debutant GEVREY CHAMBERTIN (2.05pm)  in the RSA Trial . He was a better hurdler than Many Clouds who will be a big danger. While the latter has improved over fences I think Gevrey might prove a bit special.

LIKE MINDED (3.15) has a cracking each-way chance on the same card. He won over this course two outings ago in soft ground off a mark of 129, and is only up to 137 now despite a fine effort at Kempton last time. He should put up a bold show even at the age of 10.

Up North at Haydock all eyes will be on the Aintree Grand National hopes in the big trial. The one I want to be with here is HAWKES POINT who was a fine second in the Welsh National at Chepstow. He is up 6lb for that defeat, but he’s an improver in staying events and if he takes to the obstacles should be a joy to watch.
