Neville Southall exclusive: Everton can ease past Swansea and a 30/1 acca on the FA Cup games

Everton are one step away from an FA Cup quarter final. Big Nev gives his verdict on this and a 30/1 four-team acca for the weekend.

by Neville Southall | February 14, 2014

I played against Swansea in the old First Division when John Toshack was in charge of them.

We’d a 17-year-old trainee Stuart Rimmer making his debut that day. He was on about £30 a week and I remember we had a whip-round for him on the bus on the way back. The lad felt minted. He must have doubled his wages for the week.

Howard Kendall wasn’t happy though. He went berserk saying the lad hadn’t done anything to deserve it. Anyway, we we won 3-1 and Rimmer went on to be Chester City’s leading scorer after his time on Merseyside.

It’s a big tie for Everton because if they beat Swansea at Goodison on Sunday (1.30pm) they’ll be through to the quarter finals of the FA Cup and the players will start thinking of Wembley.

But there’s another important reason.

Everton aren’t guaranteed a European place and if were to get to the final and even get beat by Manchester City, Arsenal or Chelsea and one of them won the league – it’s another route to Europe. That’s not to be sniffed at.

And Cup runs can keep the group motivated as the season reaches its climax.

We went to Bristol City in the fourth round of the Cup in 1995. The pitch was like a bombsite, it was lashing rain, there was mud everywhere and they absolutely battered us. But Matt Jackson scored and we came away with a 1-0 win went on to lift the trophy in May.

I remember John Ebbrellhad chronic diarrhoea and just spent his time standing around when he came on as a sub. We took the piss out of him something shocking afterwards.

Roberto Martinez is going for back-to-back wins in the FA Cup after guiding Wigan to victory last season. That would be some achievement. I just wonder if the league is Garry Monk’s priority at Swansea’s now he’s taken over from Michael Laudrup.

The Swans could get dragged into a relegation dogfight and the title challengers won’t want replays either. City, Chelsea and Arsenal have big Champions League games next week and won’t want extra Cup games stretching their squads to breaking point.

This happened to us under Howard Kendall in the ill-fated Super Cup in the 1985-86 season. He’d no interest in it and played a reserve team but we kept winning.

The reserve lads were delighted with themselves but Howard was like: “What the f*** you doing?

He didn’t want any more injuries. We even got to the final but Liverpool hammered us in the end.

We’ll beat Swansea on Sunday and I’d be looking at 2-0 @ 7/1 with Paddy Power.

I’m going to leave the big games like City v Chelsea (Sat) and Arsenal v Liverpool (Sun). They’re too close to call and the managers will have one eye on their European games against Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Galatasary.

So I’m going to put up four teams who I think will go through.

  • Cardiff @ 1/1 to beat Wigan at home
  • Sheffield Wednesday @ 21/20 to beat Charltonat home
  • Nottingham Forest @ 13/10 to beat Sheffield United away
  • Hull @ 11/5 to beat Brighton away

This pays about 30/1 and hopefully will keep us going right through until Monday night.
