All things Brighton beautiful: Punters from the south coast won the most on the first day of the Cheltenham Festival

It was a cracking day for Brighton punters at Cheltenham yesterday as they spanked the bookies harder than anybody else!

by Josh Powell | March 12, 2014

People from Brighton, take a bow.

The population from the south coast party town has absolutely smashed it up on day one of the Cheltenham Festival and were the most successful area of the UK and Ireland. Yes, people might think that if you’re from Brighton you skateboard to work all the time or you spent your youth passing out under the pier after a mental beach disco. But now they will recognise that you are punting legends as well.

Brighton came out on top, but the other punting hubs making up the top five at Cheltenham yesterday were Leicester, Glasgow, Cork and Newcastle.

  • Punters from Leicester will be happy enough with their winnings, but Brighton were streets ahead at the top. They made three times as much as Leicester punters on day one of  the Festival. Brighton punters were also 27 per cent better off than their local London neighbours.
  • Bristol punters propped up the bottom of the table yesterday after having a bit of a nightmare start. They’ll be hoping that red-hot favorites like Faugheen in the first can get them back on track. If anyone is on the M4 today, jump off at Bristol and give someone a hug. They need it
  • Despite the Mullins duo of Champagne Fever and Hurricane Fly failing to live up to their favouritism, Irish punters didn’t have a bad day. In particular punters from Cork probably enjoyed their Tuesday evening more than most. The Rebel County were 10 per cent better off than Dublin on day one and 12 per cent better off than punters from Galway

It was a tough day for Paddy yesterday, as the boss forked out €5.5m on the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle alone. The Tuesday banker Quevega duly obliged and the well supported pair of Holywell and Present View was another swift kick to the plums despite Champagne Fever getting pipped on the line by 33/1 shot Western Warhorse.

Brighton punters will be hoping to keep up their assault on Paddy today, while Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds and Dublin all need to step up their game to challenge the top five!
