Former Premier League ‘giants’ Bolton and Wigan played out a 1-1 draw in the Championship on Saturday, but it could have been three points for the Latics had it not been for the Bolton keeper Adam Bogdan.
Bolton looked to be heading for a 1-0 win before Man United loanee Nick Powell equalised in the final few minutes. There was still time for Wigan’s Callum McManaman to win a penalty however, and give Jordi Gomez the chance to complete a very late comeback.
Bogdan showed some serious cajones to psyche out the Wigan man though and save a point for Bolton. Rather than employee the ‘Bruce Grobbelaar wobbly knees’ approach, Bogdan stood to the right of centre on the goal-line, leaving a huge open space to his left for Gomez to stick the ball. As Gomez ran to strike the ball Bogdan moved back into the centre of the goal and then saved the ball to his right, where he had been originally standing.
Fair to say Jordi Gomez’s brain was probably completely melted in the psychological tug-of-war.
The draw keeps Bolton in that area that’s disappointingly bottom half, but not worried about relegation. As for Wigan they are still well in the mix for promotion which will make all seven of their fans absolutely chuffed.
