Scotland’s meaningless friendly with Nigeria last night got into the headlines for all the wrong reasons in the build-up, but when the dusted settled, it turned out to be quite a little cracker. If any Asian syndicates backed it to be ‘a delightful little romp featuring lots of goals, talking points and a last gasp equaliser’, then I’m sure they were laughing all the way to the bank.
Meaningless as it might have been, it did however provide this moment of quick-thinking genius from Celtic’s Charlie Mulgrew. With a team-mate’s shot squirming tamely wide, he had the presence of mind to flick it goalwards and it worked spectacularly. Yeah, he can’t have known exactly where it was going to end up, but some saying probably goes, ‘if you don’t buy a ticket to the raffle, you can’t win.’
I suppose you could fix the raffle, but as we saw in an episode of Father Ted, that brings its own issues. Just enjoy the goal.
