It’s nearly Derby and Oaks week and I’ll have all the latest news for you here on my blog, but this weekend we still have some decent races to get stuck into and try and take a few quid off Paddy.
Always feels good to do that. You hear me Paddy?
Let’s start with the Gp3 Pinnacle Stakes at Haydock, and I will be astonished if ASTONISHING (2.05) does not give us a huge run under champion Richard Hughes.
She has a small amount of ground to make up on early season form with Cubanita, but Astonishing did not get the clearest runs that day and ca improve past that one. Added to that, Cubanita has since run poorly at York although she may not have stayed the 14f that afternoon.
Also at Haydock GARSWOOD (2.40pm) runs without a penalty and should take all the beating. Soft ground and 7f is right up this one’s street, and he will have blown a few cobwebs away over a mile at Sandown first time.
He ran Moonlight Cloud to 3l in France in Gp1 company last season, and getting 3lb from Amarillo is a bonus. Eton Forever is the probable danger.
At York, the Listed 1m6f event is interesting and wide open so worth a look. RAWAKI (2.20pm) arguably ran his best race over 2m at Ascot behind Homeric when a close 5th, but has been campaigned over a 1m4f in recent times. This trip might be ideal and bring out a little bit more improvement. If so if he will be bang there. Have a few quid on each-way.
Finally, the Listed Achilles Stakes at Haydock features some old favourites, and with Noble Storm in the field you know you are assured a strong gallop. That will suit the seasonal debut of YORK GLORY (3.15pm), who faces a tough test first time out but has perfect conditions. Hughes on board is a bonus and he will suit this animal. Should be hard to beat.
So have a great weekend and let’s hope we get some wonga in the bag before the Classic action in a few days time. Be lovely to bet with Paddy’s cash then. Yeeehaaa!
