If someone had told you before the opening game of Group B they were backing Holland to beat Spain 5-1, you probably would have had them sectioned. And with good reason. Few people expected Holland to win, let alone hammer the reigning champions.
But, despite a Xabi Alonso penalty before the half hour mark, the Dutch recorded a famous thumping courtesy of a brace each from Robin van Persie and Arjen Robben. Defender Stefan de Vrij was the man with the other goal. Even more incredibly 10 Paddy Power punters backed the 5-1 correct score and are cashing in on a whopping 500/1 punt. It’s the kind of bet you’re more likely to see in our Stupid Punt section, but once Robben made it five with ten minutes to go on the clock, that ridiculous punt was bordering on a stroke of genius.
One of the lucky 10, a punter based in the UK, had stuck an optimistic £2 on meaning he’s celebrating Friday night with a cold hard grand in his back pocket. We can’t imagine how sore those heads will feel tomorrow morning.
While Paddy might be celebrating a victory for the bookies with Spain getting turned over, the boss certainly hasn’t had it all his own way.
- 336 punters in total had Robin van Persie to score two or more tonight at odds of 22/1
- Another 176 had Arjen Robben to score two or more in tonight’s game. One Northern ireland based punter stuck £50 on this at 45/1 which means he has a tasty £2,300 coming his way courtesy of some dodgy keeping from Iker Casillas
- Just the four punters had Holland to win by four or more goals at 325/1
But despite all those incredible punts, not one person called the scorecast. One punter had the 5-1 scorecast with Diego Costa to score first at 1,500/1 but that was the closest anyone came. Unlucky pal.
To those people picking up some big winnings tonight after punting crazy bets, you are pretty mental, but we salute your cajones.
