Stupid Punt: Your craziest bets on England v Uruguay

It's all well and good being patriotic, but these bets are simply ridiculous...

by Josh Powell | June 19, 2014

The biggest game for England at the World Cup is here, and the tension ahead of the match with Uruguay is obviously sending a few punters bananas, judging by some of the crazy bets in Paddy Power’s book. Here on the Paddy Power Blog we like nothing more than a punter clicked a massive bet, and entering our very exclusive Hall of Fame. Just last week, 10 punters correctly plucked out a 500/1 correct score from the madness that was Spain 1-5 Holland and a similar result tonight in the Three Lions’ favour would see some monster payouts.

Winning a bet at monster odds takes a little bit of nous, a sprinkling of luck and a whole lot of cajones, but if it comes off you’ll be living off the glory for months. Random people will hail you a genius on Twitter, friends will parade you around on their shoulders and members of the opposite sex will almost definitely be more attracted to you. Probably.

Here are three of the craziest bets you have placed on England’s Group D game with Uruguay tonight and some stats that try to back them up…

Scorecast: Raheem Sterling to score first and England to win 4-3
One Middlesex punter has 50p on at 700/1

  • Raheem Sterling attempted four shots for England against Italy, all four were off target
  • The last time England won 4-3 was in a European Championship qualifier against Denmark in September 1978. Kevin Keegan bagged a couple of goals on that occasion
  • The last time England scored four goals at the World Cup finals was in some game in 1966. Can’t quite remember it to be honest, nobody really talks about it anymore…

Scorecast: Edison Cavani to score first, but England to come back and win 5-2
One punter in Staffordshire has £1.25 on at 1000/1

  • England haven’t won a game 5-2 since 1960 when they beat Northern Ireland at Windsor Park in the British Championship
  • Cavani was influential for PSG this year scoring 16 goals in 30 league games and helping his team to another Ligue 1 title
  • 22 in 63 for Uruguay

Scorecast: Daniel Sturridge to score first and England to win 7-0
One punter from the Home Counties has £1 on at 1500/1

  • Last time England scored exactly seven goals in a game was in November 1993 when they beat San Marino in a World Cup qualifier. Ian Wright bagged four on that day and Paul Ince helped himself to a brace
  • The last time the Three Lions won 7-0 was on 26 September 1973 when they beat Austria in a friendly at Wembley
  • Sturridge bagged 21 goals in 26 games for Liverpool this year and kept that red-hot streak going by scoring against the Italians in England’s opening World Cup match
