Plenty of punters are siding against England tonight, with just 37 per cent of punters cash in Paddy’s book on Roy Hodgson’s men. A far cry from the amount of patriotic pennies that saw the Three Lions go off favourites against Italy and a shade odds-on against Uruguay. But of all the people siding with the opposition, we dug a little deeper to find out which UK city is the most likely to betray England in their final Group D match with Costa Rica.
The Capital tops the charts as the most treacherous cities as punters lump on the South American outfit. Londoners are closely followed by New Malden, which in all honesty is a place we had to Google. Apparently New Malden is south-west of London and is the most densely populated area of Koreans outside of South Korea, which goes some way to explaining why they’re backing against the Three Lions. There’s a fun fact to bring up at the pub quiz on Sunday.
Unsurprisingly Glasgow makes the top three as the Scots up the ‘Anyone But England’ bandwagon, and Manchester and Hemel Hempstead – the place where legendary sportsmen Chris Eagles and Luke Donald were born – round off the top five. Birmingham, Warrington, Leicester and Cheltenham all make a treacherous appearance with Newtonabbey in County Antrim, Northern Ireland sneaking in to take 10th spot.
