Ronda Rousey was expected to beat Alexis Davis at UFC 175, Las Vegas, in the early hours of Sunday morning but not in less than 20 seconds. The women’s bantamweight champion made the fourth defence of her title and maintained her perfect 10-0 record. All ten wins coming within the distance.
The 27-year old former Olympian was expected to be given a vigorous work-out against ground specialist Alexis Davis (29) who came into the bout with a five fight win streak. However Rousey must have had another movie to film because she wrapped things up in 16 seconds of pure class.
Watch below as Rowdy Ronda lands a heavy right, hip throws Davis to the mat and pummels her unconscious. That’s two striking finishes on the bounce for the Queen of MMA after eight straight arm-bar victories. I think we can safely say her striking is improving.
The only question is if there is a female fighter out there who can seriously trouble the ever improving Rousey? Cris Cyborg seems a hard deal to get done. Gina Carano will sell tickets but her five years out of the octagon may mean she’s fallen behind the curve in a rapidly evolving sport. Cat Zingano is a legitimate threat but after the year she’s had with injuries and personal tragedy it’s difficult to predict how she’ll come back from it. Whoever it is if they can beat Ronda then we will see women’s MMA really take off. A big star is great but a big rivalry is greater.
