It started as a loose idea in the pub over a quiet weekend pint.
‘Wes Welker’s horse is running against Paddy’s horse at Newmarket – let’s, er, do something with that…’
Wes owns US raider Undrafted (20/1) who will take on Slade Power (11/4) and Sole Power (7/1, owned by Paddy’s mum) in Saturday’s group one July Cup at Newmarket.
Good on you, Wes!
Welker was undrafted in 2004 before debuting for the San Diego Chargers later that year – hence the name of his horse, who was a grade three winner at Belmont in June. He played for the New England Patriots and Miami Dolphins too and is now on a $12m contract with the Broncos, having played in three Super Bowls.
Welker confirmed he will attend the July Cup, telling the Racing Post: “I really enjoy horse racing and the training aspect because horses are similar to football players. They have short careers, injuries play a huge part, so how you train them is very similar to how we train and get ready. I’m making a quick trip because I’ve been training in Florida. I will leave Friday evening, get in early Saturday and head to the races, hopefully celebrate a little that night and fly back Sunday morning.”
Paddy has offered €5,000 to a charity of Welker’s choice if Undrafted beats Slade Power OR Sole Power, while we asked the sportsman to give the same amount to a charity of Paddy’s choice if Undrafted can’t beat either of the Power horses, owned by Paddy’s mum Sabena.
Paddy Power said: “Wes has shown just what a good sport he is by accepting my charity twitter challenge and I very much look forward to meeting him at the July Course and hopefully, picking up a nice cheque from him for a worthy cause.”
Wes (above) was recently spotted dishing out the dollars after winning big at the Kentucky Derby. We like the cut of your jib, Wes.
Speaking of the bet with Paddy, Welker told the Racing Post: “I’m not scared of any bet, whatever they want to do.”
- Will Slade and Sole beat Undrafted or will the American challenger make Paddy eat his words?
