Matt Chapman exclusive: Step right up for a golden tip at Newmarket

I've got my eye on a nice filly in the Group One feature race for day two of the July festival

by Matt Chapman | July 10, 2014

The second day of the Newmarket July Meeting kicks off with a highly competitive 7f handicap – but the harder the race the bigger the odds. And the bigger the odds the more we take off Paddy. You hear me Paddy?

Denver Broncos’ star Wes Welker has already taken Paddy’s challenge in the July Cup on Saturday so let’s hope it’s a double smash up for the big fella.

ETAAB (1.40pm) won off a mark of 80 at Yarmouth over a mile last time and drops back to 7f. He’s now got a rating of 86 – but I thought he won much more easily than the winning margin suggested. This is tougher I think he’s got every chance of winning again.

The Group 2 Duchess of Cambridge Stakes looks a poor renewal for me although High Celebrity could be very good. I will stick with I AM BEAUTIFUL (2.10pm), who went from being a maiden to winning at Group 3 last time. I could see her banging off in front and being hard to catch.

The big race of the day is the Group 1 Falmouth Stakes. It gives 2013 1,000 Guineas heroine SKY LANTERN (2.40pm) the chance to bounce back to her best on a track she loves. Sky Lantern has over five lengths to find on Integral on their Ascot form – but is 5lb better off. She was making her seasonal debut at the Royal meeting and should be fitter now as well.

Finally, the 6f handicap is a tough one and features a fast improving horse in High on Life, who has gone up from mark of 73 to 95. Maybe this will be one dance too many.

I like GOLDEN STEPS (3.15pm) who on form is held by Kickboxer – but is likely to have much more improvement in him than that rival.

Obviously we have to hope the pace is in the high numbers, but the Marco Botti stable is one to follow right now in a race where Paddy is paying Money Back as a free bet if your horse finishes second or third.

Let’s hope for a cracking day before one of the biggest betting days of the year on Saturday. Yeeehaaa!
