Galway preview: Paddy’s sweet on a 14/1 shot on the opening night at Ballybrit

We've 24 hours to go to Goodwood but I fancy a nice-priced English raider for Galway's Monday night feature.

A week to savour for all racing fans with two major racing festivals on both sides of the Irish Sea.

The purists are well catered for at Goodwood (Tuesday-Saturday) with the ‘duel on the downs’ clash in the Sussex Stakes between Royal Ascot winners Kingman and Toronado an obvious highlight on Wednesday.

Galway starts on Monday night though and as ever, the seven-day marathon provides different charms.

Galway-Races 840

I’ll bet most Irish punters will be looking to the West for a week of wine, women and Weld.

Stamina is a huge asset for both man and beast at Ballybrit. So while the trends followers will steam into Galway’s 27-time leading trainer Dermot Weld’Postulation (6.10pm) for the first Flat maiden on the card – keeping the powder relatively dry is advised.

The qualified riders’ race is Monday’s highlight and is as competitive as ever with Tony Martin’s Quick Jack well backed in the ante-post market.

But I’ve a sneaky feeling that Streets of Newyork (6.45pm) might be able to do us a favour at around the 14/1 mark in early trading.

UK trainer Brian Ellison’s raids on Ireland are always worth a second glance. From a good draw and with the step up in trip promising to suit he looks a sporting bet.
