On a night where nine of the twelve fights went the distance at UFC on Fox 12 in San Jose, California, we were still treated to a big KO finish in the co-main event. Anthony “Rumble” Johnson continued his UFC rejuvenation with a brutal stoppage of MMA legend Antônio Rogério Nogueira just 45 seconds in to their light-heavyweight bout.
Little Nog was making his first appearance in the octagon since his win over Rashad Evans in January 2013. Let’s hope it’s his last. At 38 years of age he’s past his best, has no chance of making a title challenge and may just suffer similarly brutal defeats if he decides to hang around the UFC too much longer.
Johnson on the other hand is very much on his way up. After being cut by the UFC following his loss to Vitor Belfort in 2012, having missed weight for the third time, Rumble went away, missed weight one more time and then got his shit together. he put together a six fight win-streak outside of the organisation and returned in April to dominate top light-heavyweight Phil Davis. With this eye-catching finish Johnson is lining himself up for a shot at Jon Jones’ title. He may have to wait until Jones beats Daniel Comier in his next fight and then has his rematch against Alexander Gustafsson. Though who knows what those trickster fighting gods will do to change the course of events.
