Matt Chapman exclusive: Scotland gets my vote at Goodwood and I’ve a golden tip for the Galway Plate

We hit the crossbar yesterday but this is a marathon week not a sprint. Yeeehaaa!

by Matt Chapman | July 29, 2014

What a Wednesday lies in store with the best of British at Glorious Goodwood and the best of Irish jumps at Galway. Something for everyone as they say and a real chance to take a few quid off Paddy.

It’s impossible to oppose MAID IN RIO (1.55pm) in the Goodwood Stakes. She bolted up at Ascot last weekend and races off just 3lb higher here. If she shows anywhere near that form she will take all the beating. I am certain she will stay.

The second race on the card is interesting. Somewhat is clear on ratings if you believe his Eclipse form – but I don’t! The one I like is SCOTLAND (2.30pm) who was staying on well from off the pace over 1m 4f at Royal Ascot behind Eagle Top. I think he’ll love this extra distance and I fancy him quite a bit.

The Sussex Stakes is the feature at Goodwood but I don’t see any danger to KINGMAN (3.05pm). He’s simply the best three-year-old over a mile this season and one of the best in recent times. I can’t see how Toronado can possibly give him 8lb and a beating. Some are worried about the track for Kingman. I’m not.

the Vintage Stakes might well end up a battle between the lightly-raced Irish raider Highland Reel and TUPI (3.40pm). Richard Hughes’ mount made a big impression at Sandown from off the pace on his seasonal debut. Highland Reel was very impressive last time at Gowran Park but I just get the feeling he might not be the easiest of rides and Tupi is open to more improvement.

Galway-Races 840

In Ireland, the Galway Plate takes centre stage. It’s the first time I haven’t been at Ballybrit for about six years and I’m gutted not to be there.

I tipped up GOLDEN WONDER (5.30pm) in the Irish National and he ran a cracker to finish second – having traveled sweetly for much of the race.

He’s been beaten off marks in the 130s in the past so for the handicapper to give him 141 in the Plate is a bit harsh. But the drop in trip won’t be a problem and I expect another big run. Back him each-way in a race that Paddy’s paying five places

Hope you have a fabulous Wednesday, and it will be made even better with a few Yeeehaaas! You hear me Paddy?
