Galway preview: The 7/1 shot I’m keeping onside for the Topaz Mile

Curragh trainer Kevin Prendergast could hold the key to Tuesday's feature at Ballybrit

by Paddy Power | July 29, 2014

5.35pm: Domination: was a leading fancy for the Galway Plate but has taken the easier option today instead. Second at Killarney the last time over jumps he’s been in great form on the Flat having won win at Royal Ascot and was just touched off in a Listed race at Sandown on Eclipse day.

A lot of runners are exposed in this race but he’s had only three runs over fences. Well supported into 13/8f (from 9/4 this morning) to give trainer Charles Byrnes a winner on day two at Ballybrit.

6.40pm: The feature race of the night is the Topaz Mile and I really like Kevin Prendergast’s Maskoon here around the 7/1 mark. Kevin knows how to win this race. He’s won it in 2012 with Vastonea – who runs again tonight as well as Celtic Dane (2008) and Eklim (2003).

He ran an absolute cracker in a handicap in the Curragh on Derby weekend finishing third to Aidan O’Briens Table Rock who went on to win a Listed Race at Newmarket. The last three-year-old winner of this race was Palace Star in 2004 but the three-year-old allowance means Maksoon runs off bottom weight of 8-9 in this fiercely-competitive handicap – where you can pick your own Money Back Special.

7.10pm: Coolfighter was a big eye-catcher at Tipperary three runs back when coming from nowhere to finish third after being slowly out of the stalls. He got no luck in running when last seen at Killarney but this two-mile trip up the stiff Galway hill might see him out-run his odds of 14/1 and challenge for the places.
