Goodwood and Galway take centre stage on Thursday and I’ve been studying away trying to bring you some winners and dent the Paddy Power profits!
I’m expecting a big run from Mark Johnston’s RAINBOW ROCK (2.05pm) who has a good draw in the opening Fairmount Stakes. Cam Hardie takes the ride and as he takes 5lb off the selection it will be only 1lb higher than when hacking up at Beverley when stepped up in trip last time.
The Group 2 Richmond Sakes is tough, but I’m pinning my hopes on IVAWOOD (2.35pm) who has to give weight to all its rivals. Many will fancy Jungle Cat, the Coventry third and runner-up to Ivawood at Newmarket – who will love this speed test.
But I thought Ivawood looked very promising and he can defy top weight.
The big staying event of the day is the Goodwood Cup and the one I like is the Ascot Gold Cup fourth and last year’s winner here BROWN PANTHER (3.10pm).
He may have been a beaten fav in France last time – but is better than that.
Some may think he needs soft ground to perform to his best – but I don’t. His effort in the Ascot Gold Cup was one of his best and that was on good to firm. This is not the greatest renewal and he should take all the beating.
Finally at Goodwood I will be cheering home last year’s Galway Hurdle winner MISSUNITED (3.45pm) in the the Group 3 Lillie Langtry Stakes. She ran a cracker in the Ascot Gold Cup and is so tough that I won’t be looking beyond her to lift this prize.
The main event in Ireland is the Galway Hurdle and I remember tipping up Missunited in this 12 months ago. I want the same again!
This time take a chance with HISAABAAT (4.55pm), who will be a big price despite being trained by Dermot Weld. He could spring a surprise in a race where Paddy is paying the first 5 home.
The selection ran a cracking race when fifth in this 12 months ago and had a spin on the Flat at Leopardstown when seventh behind one of the leading fancies Bayan.
He was once rated 148 over hurdles but runs here off 134. If he returns to his best he could be chucked in.
