It is far from easy to pick the winner of the Galway Hurdle – one of the feature races of the seven-day long Galway Festival that is as lively off the track as on it. It’s even harder to then pick four more winners – particularly when three of them are at odds of 12/1, 14/1 and 16/1. But that’s exactly what one lucky iPhone punter from County Meath did on Thursday at the Festival and there’s nothing better to kick-start the weekend than a fresh £83k dropping into the e-wallet.
Well €83,252.05 to be exact. The bean-counters’ eyes are watering as they read no doubt.
The winnings came from two bets. Firstly a Lucky 31 that cost €6.20 returned over €14.5k including €2.5k thanks to the bosses Lucky 31 bonus, before a €1 each-way accumulator on the same five horses returned a monster €68k, which included €14k thanks to Paddy’s guaranteed prices! A truly staggering punt.
Here it is in full:
The winners began in the opening race of the day at 1.50pm, as 16/1 shot Aranhill Chief upset the odds to win for Denis O’Regan and get the ball rolling on this monster bet. Hasanour (14/1) then obliged in the 3.00pm handicap to win by a head before Dalkova (12/1) beat the 8/11 favourite Tested for Dermot Weld. At 4.55pm AP McCoy made it four out of four for this punter by winning his first Galway Hurdle on the favourite Thomas Edison (5/1) before Ridestan (7/2) won the 5.35pm by a comfortable margin to seal the deal.
It took less than four hours and €8.20 had turned into more than €83k. Not a bad day’s work at all. Well done you.
