Pat Flynn’s Moon Dice (5:10) has triumphed just once since winning the Galway Hurdle in 2011 but I, and more importantly the punters, fancy it (now 13/2 from 10s) to roll back the years in the first on Friday evening in Galway.
He finished eye-catchingly well here in the amateur handicap on Monday night to finish sixth to Quick Jack and although he ran a stinker in his most recent handicap hurdle in Ballinrobe, Monday’s run gives me a enough confidence to take a flyer.
Balbriggan (6:15), having his first run for Gordon Elliot, is the interesting one for me in this race. He was well beaten on his last run for Mick Channon at Huntingdon in April but I’d expect to see some improvement tonight, wearing a first-time tongue tie (where can a man get a couple of those for the office?). Has been very well backed overnight from 8s into 11/2 too so somebody somewhere is confident.
It’s hard to go through the card in Galway and not tip a Dermot Weld horse. That’s exactly what I’m going to do here although we have seen a lot of shrewd cash for Show Court in the big race tonight (6:50) so don’t be surprised if the Master of Rosewell strikes again. However, the one I like here is Aidan O’Brien’s Egyptian Warrior who ran a great race in Leopardstown last Thursday night, finishing second to Strandfield Lady. I’d expect him to reverse the form here tonight. Ana takes a few valuable pounds off and Aidan would love to get her a winner in Galway. This could be the one.
