ANDY GRAY: Bank on Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea to land you a 2/1 winner

by Paddy Power | August 15, 2014

Hello and welcome to the first week of a new series that we like to call ‘Are You* Smarter Than Andy Gray? (*the you in this case referring to you plural)’.

The premise is simples. We ask top pundit and very Scottish man, Andy Gray for his predictions about the weekend Premier League action and pit his predictions against the most popular bet you (you plural again – as in the Paddy Power customers) have picked in that match and/or market. We’ll award a point for every result either side gets right and tally team up on a week by week basis.

Is it another sign of the increasing reduction of society into faceless numbers for some sort of futile measurement of our worth? Yes – it kind of is. But hopefully it means that when the Hunger Games finally come around, we’ll be steeled for battle thanks to football tipping. GO ON THE DISTRICT 12!!!

So – before you can say Haymitch Abernathy, here’s week one of the competition:

Andy’s Accum: Manchester United (v Swansea), Liverpool (v Southampton), Arsenal (v Palace) and Chelsea (v Burnley) all to win – 21/10
You say: The exact same.

RESULT: Andy 0 | You 0

Arsenal v Crystal Palace, Saturday 17:30

Andy Says:
Alexis Sanchez in line to make his debut. Keith Millen takes charge with the departure of Tony Pulis.

  • Sanchez can either play out wide and float around or play off Giroud. That’s great.
  • Their different options in attack give Arsenal a great chance to challenge.
  • Aaron Ramsey to score first and an Arsenal win.

Andy’s Predictions: Arsenal win | Ramsey First Goalscorer
You say: Arsenal win | Ramsey First Goalscorer

RESULT: Andy 1 | You 1

Chelsea v Burnley, Monday 20:00

Andy Says:
Chelsea have spent big over the summer. Will it pay off? Burnley will be fired up for their first game back in the top flight.

  • Courtois to replace Cech – it doesn’t weaken Chelsea one bit.
  • Chelsea to win the league after a disappointing campaign last season.
  • Diego Costa to open his account and Chelsea to win this one.

Andy’s Predictions: Chelsea win | Costa Anytime Goalscorer
You say: Chelsea win | Costa Anytime Goalscorer

RESULT: Andy 2 | You 2

Liverpool v Southampton, Sunday 13:30

Andy Says:
Liverpool have cleaned Southampton out like a house in Glasgow. Ronald Koeman will have a big job on his hands.

  • Could be a baptism of fire for Ronald Koeman. If Liverpool start well they could will by three or four.
  • Liverpool never replaced Luis Suarez’s goals, but should still be looking at top four finish.
  • Daniel Sturridge to open the scoring and Liverpool to win.

Andy’s Predictions: Liverpool win | Sturridge to score first
You say: Liverpool win | Sterling to score first

RESULT: Andy 1 | You 2

Manchester United v Swansea, Saturday 12:45

Andy Says:
Louis Van Gaal takes charge of his first competitive game as Manchester united manager against the team they beat 4-1 on the opening day last season.

  • It’s the best game for Louis Van Gaal to begin with.
  • Manchester United to be top of the table by the end of September.
  • Wayne Rooney to be first goalscorer and Manchester United to win.

Andy’s Predictions: Manchester United win | Rooney to score first
You say: Manchester United win | Rooney to score first

RESULT: Andy 0 | You 0

Newcastle v Manchester City, Saturday 15:00

Andy Says:
Champions Manchester City travel to Tyneside to take on the Geordies. Will we see more Alan Pardrew antics or will he behave himself?

  • Don’t read too much into the Community shield game. City were missing some players and it was still pre-season.
  • Newcastle have added some quality players and could do well this season.
  • Stevan Jovetic to be the first to score and Newcastle to peg them back. Score draw.

Andy’s Predictions: Draw | Jovetic to score first
You say: Manchester City win | Aguero to score first

RESULT: Andy 0 | You 1

Leicester v Everton, Saturday 15:00

Andy Says
Leicester are out to prove a point after 10 years away. Will record signing Romelu Lukaku fire Everton into the top four?

  • Leicester will be up for their first game back and Everton have been poor in pre-season. Score draw.
  • Too much money invested in Lukaku.
  • Leicester could struggle and finish in the bottom four.

Andy’s Prediction: Draw
You say: Everton win

RESULT: Andy 1 | You 0

QPR v Hull, Saturday 15:00

Andy Says:
Can Harry keep QPR up this round? Will Steve Bruce be able to led Hull back to Europe?

  • Hull’s European adventure could cost them.
  • QPR have added some good players and should be safe.
  • QPR to open the new season with a win.

Andy’s Prediction: QPR win
You say: QPR win

RESULT: Andy 0 | You 0

West Brom v Sunderland, Saturday 15:00

Andy Says
Gus Poyet’s first full season at Sunderland should see them stay up. Is Alan Irvine the right man for the job?

  • West Brom will struggle with an inexperienced manager.
  • Sunderland should have enough to stay up this season.
  • Should end in a score draw.

Andy’s Prediction: Draw
You say: Sunderland

RESULT: Andy 1 | You 0

Stoke v Aston Villa, Saturday 15:00

Andy Says
Will Bojan be able to do it on a cold, wet Tuesday night in Stoke? and can Roy Keane be the man to help turn around Aston Villa’s fortunes?

  • Bojan was a great signing to add something different to Stoke.
  • Villa haven’t added any real quality over the summer and may struggle.
  • Stoke should win at home.

Andy’s Prediction: Stoke win
You say: Stoke win

RESULT: Andy 0 | You 0

West Ham v Tottenham, Saturday 15:00

Andy Says:

It’s make or break for this Spurs squad this season. West Ham have put all their eggs in the Valencia basket and if it goes wrong they could suffer.

  • There’s a lot of expectation on Soldado after a disappointing campaign last season.
  • West Ham never learn. £15 million for Carroll and £12 million for Valencia.
  • It’ll be a tight game, but Spurs should see it home.

Andy’s Prediction: Tottenham win
You say: Tottenham win

RESULT: Andy 1 | You 1

WEEK ONE TOTALS: Andy 7 | You 7
