It’s been an interesting week for yours truly, having been ripped to pieces by Kieren Fallon in the papers for apparently slagging him over a ride at Southwell on ATR’s Sunday Forum. Now that came as a bit of a bolt from the blue, as no such slagging had ever taken place! Funny old game. Still, it’s set the blood boiling for this weekend’s blog as I have another look at the feature events and give you my idea of what might hurt Paddy! You hear me Paddy?
At Newbury there’s some decent Group racing, and I like the look of Gregorian (3/1) in the Hungerford, a race he won 12 months ago. Now this horse likes soft ground, but not heavy, and even for him it was too soft in France last time. I expect him to bounce back here.
The Geoffrey Freer has long been one of my favourite races, and Pether’s Moon is back blinkered first time after doing us a favour at Goodwood. However, he has a penalty here over a longer trip, and the one I like is Seismos (9/1), who is a proven stayer and loves some dig. He’s got a bit to find on official ratings, but I think he’s up to it.
At Ripon it’s the Great St Wilfrid, and of course the draw will play a part, with low numbers possibly favoured if the ground turns testing. I tipped Out Do (11/1) at York recently and he ran a cracker. He has also since run well. coming third at this track. Alas he is totally in the grip of the handicapper, but this weekend he is visored for the first time, and if that brings out just a little improvement, he should be bang there for a stable that hit it big at Leopardstown on Thursday night.
Elsewhere there are huge races in America this weekend, and it’s worth taking a look at the Arlington Million live on Attheraces on Saturday night. This race is perfect for Breeders’ Cup hero Magician (11/10), who should be hard to beat.
Meanwhile, in the Beverly D Stakes at Arlington, Frankie Dettori has a chance to make up for defeat last time on Stephanie’s Kitten. This horse should have won the Diana on her last start, but she was given too much to do and can get the job done here.
So enjoy another cracking weekend of action, and if we take a few quid off Paddy, give it a Yeeehaaa!
