It’s day three of the Ebor festival and I’ve been waiting for the Group One Nunthorpe Stakes since my mother’s horse Sole Power hosed up in the Kings Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot.
We’re hopeful that he will do the same here – but won’t be the 100/1 shot he was when winning in 2010. I’ll be on him at around the 4/1 mark but keep your eyes on the skies for rain – he needs good at least to be at his best.
There are loads of dangers but one that I’m really worried about is Ballydoyle’s Cougar Mountain who ran a cracker when fifth in the July Cup over 6f behind stablemate Slade Power.
He should improve again on that run and trainer Aidan O’Brien is looking for a clean sweep of the Group One’s at the meeting after Australia and Tapestry both delivered.
We’ve been leading the field by some way from the competition with our Extra Place Specials this year (above) and today our Money Back Special where we’ll be refunding single stakes on the 2nd and 3rd placed horses as a free bet is on the 3.05 – but my value bet comes in the first race on the card.
Trainer John Gosden and jockey Paul Hanagan will be scratching their heads as to how Taghrooda got beaten yesterday but I’m going to take a chance on them getting some quick compensation.
Lahaag (1.55) has a great track record having won and been second twice from just four starts. Although he hasn’t been in great form this season he’s dropped to a mark of 92 having won off 97 over this trip last season. He looks a fair each-way price at an early price of about 16/1 in the opener today.
