Manchester United loanee Nani started his first game for Sporting Lisbon this weekend, and it didn’t exactly go to plan.
The winger arrived in Portugal to a heroes welcome this week, but his debut at home to Arouca left plenty to be desired. Wearing number 77 (?!) Nani started the game and his first meaningful contribution was picking up a yellow card just after the half hour mark. Worse was to come as he then missed a penalty in the 63rd minute despite using the old step-stop-step-stop run-up that we all know is so very effective in top flight football. The keeper guessed the right way and Nani’s spot-kick was a handy height to push on to the post. Just over 10 minutes later he got the hook, but his blushes were partly spared as Carlos Mane bagged the winner for Sporting Lisbon three minutes into stoppage time.
It’s not exactly the match report Louis Van Gaal or any United fan will be particularly happy to hear about – especially considering the club are paying his £4.8m in wages for the year. Still, it’s a small price to pay to avoid these types of dreadful efforts at Old Trafford…
