Andy Gray: Manchester United will finally find winning ways but Liverpool won’t have it as easy at Tottenham

Andy Gray goes head to head with the most popular bet of Paddy Power punters

by Sean Goff | August 29, 2014

After two weeks of pitting Andy Gray’s predictions against the most popular bets of the Paddy Power punters and asking ‘Are You* Smarter Than Andy Gray? (You plural)’, Andy has streaked clear. Not in the nudist ‘look at my balls’ sort of way – more a streaking in the sense of having a much better week in terms of tipping than you plural.

Andy Gray  19 –  11 You* (you plural)

That’s a firm lead for Andy, especially as we’re allocating a point for every prediction regardless of the actual odds involved for the bet. If you’re a bit bored or you want to see how last week went down, have a look here. It wasn’t a disaster with Paddy Power punters at least nailing their most popular acca, but as Andy’s acca paid a slightly bigger price, he gets the point for that. Plus he really nailed it on the Chelsea and Manchester City matches.
Fair play, you beautiful Scotsman.

So once again, Andy Gray is whipping out his crystal ball and taking on the might of the Paddy Power customers. We pick the most popular bet among Paddy Power customers and see how it performs against Andy’s tip. Shite is the short answer after two Premier League weekends, but that might change with a tricky looking weekend of banana-skin looking fixtures. Can you plural close the gap? We certainly hope so, because Andy gets awful smug when he knows he’s right.

Andy’s weekend treble: Manchester United (A v Burnley),
Newcastle (H v Crystal Palace) and Aston Villa (H v Hull)
(just under) 11/2

You say: Manchester United (A v Burnley),
Manchester City (H v Stoke) and Arsenal (A v Leicester)
(just under) 5/2

RESULT: Andy 0 You 0

————————————————————————-

Burnley v Manchester United
Turf Moor,  Saturday 12.45 – BT Sports

Andy Says
United are still searching for their first competitive win under van Gaal. Burnley will put it up to them.

  • Stronger United team than midweek, looking for an identity on the pitch, lacking belief, edgy in defence
  • Burnley are well-organised and full of spirit, but there’s a lack of quality
  • United will finally get their first win of the season

Andy’s bets: United to win | Robin van Persie 1st Goalscorer | Juan Mata anytime goalscorer
You say: United to win | Wayne Rooney 1st Goalscorer | Angel Di Maria anytime goalscorer

RESULT: Andy 0 You 0

————————————————————————-

Man City v Stoke
Etihad Stadium, Saturday 3pm

Andy Says
City have clicked into gear after a poor Community Shield, Stoke are struggling a bit for form

  • City looked impressive in their two games so far – improved on last season’s efforts, incredible depth
  • Stoke have a shocking record at City. It’s hard to cause City problems and they won’t be able to do it
  • City will win this one comfortably

Andy’s bets: City win | Dzeko 1st Goalscorer
You say: City win | Jovetic 1st Goalscorer

RESULT: Andy 0 You 0

————————————————————————-

Newcastle v Crystal Palace
St James Park, Saturday 3pm

Andy Says
No wins for either team so far in the league, but Newcastle have been more impressive so far

  • Newcastle are hinting that they could play some decent football
  • Palace were a shambles against West Ham. Hard to see Warnock turn it around this quickly.
  • This looks like a home win all over

Andy’s bets: Newcastle win
You say: Newcastle win

RESULT: Andy 0 You 0

————————————————————————-

QPR v Sunderland
Loftus Road, Saturday 3pm

Andy Says
Harry Redknapp’s team are struggling despite a big recruitment drive and lots of cash. Sunderland are looking good

  • QPR are struggling. Home advantage won’t be enough to cover up the deficiencies
  • Sunderland looked very good against United last week. A similar performance will get them a win
  • The Black Cats will get their paws on all three points here

Andy’s bets: Sunderland win
You say: Sunderland win

RESULT: Andy 0 You 0

————————————————————————-

Swansea v West Brom
Liberty Stadium, Saturday 3pm

Andy Says
Swansea have made an excellent start to the season, but maintaining that form is tricky

  • The Swans are playing well, but getting three wins in a row is tough in this league
  • West Brom will be hard to break down
  • This looks like a draw to me

Andy’s bets: Draw | 1-1 Draw
You say: Swansea | Swansea 2-1

RESULT: Andy 0 You 1

————————————————————————-

West Ham v Southampton
Upton Park, Saturday 3pm

Andy Says
West Ham had a nice win at Selhurst Park last week, Southampton aren’t quite in form yet

  • West Ham have the wind in their sails and some confidence. That’s crucial here
  • Southampton have been good in patches, but no wins is a bit of a monkey on their back
  • The Hammers will have too much for the Saints

Andy’s bets: West Ham win
You say: West Ham win

RESULT: Andy 0 You 0

————————————————————————-

Everton v Chelsea
Goodison Park, 5.30pm, Saturday

White Hart Lane, 1.30pm, Sunday

Andy Says
Two draws, two second half collapses for Everton. Chelsea have two wins and are looking good already

  • Everton aren’t playing badly, but their attacking style could play into Mourinho’s hands
  • Chelsea are without Costa, but this could be set up for a defensive counter-attacking win
  • I hate to say it, but I think Chelsea will nick it

Andy’s bets: Chelsea win | Chelsea 1-0 | Eden Hazard first goalscorer
You say: Chelsea win | Chelsea 2-1 | Diego Costa first goalscorer

RESULT: Andy 1 You 2

————————————————————————-

Tottenham v Liverpool
White Hart Lane, 1.30pm, Sunday

Andy Says
Liverpool weren’t bad in defeat to City, but Tottenham will be eager for revenge for last year’s hammering

  • Spurs have started really well under Pochettino, they’ll want to atone for last year’s shocker in this fixture
  • Liverpool had their moments against City, but made too many mistakes at the back
  • It’ll be an open, exciting game but I can’t split the teams

Andy’s bets: Draw | 2-2 Draw | Henderson anytime goalscorer
You say: Liverpool | Liverpool 2-1 | Balotelli anytime goalscorer

RESULT: Andy 0 You 1

————————————————————————-

Aston Villa v Hull
Villa Park, 1.30pm, Sunday

Andy Says
Home form isn’t Villa’s strong point, but Hull’s European exploits doesn’t help their cause

  • Villa are looking a bit toothless in attack, but should be able to nick a goal
  • Hull don’t have the squad to compete on two fronts, so being knocked out of Europe isn’t the worst
  • Not expecting many goals, but Villa should do enough to win

Andy’s bets: Aston Villa win | Aston Villa 1-0
You say: Aston Villa win |  Aston Villa 2-1

RESULT: Andy 1 You 2

————————————————————————-

Leicester v Arsenal
Walker’s Stadium, 4pm Sunday

Andy Says
Arsenal have Champions League football in the bag, Leicester have made a decent start to their Premier League campaign

  • The Foxes have shown a good attitude in their games so far, even if it is a tricky start to the season
  • Arsenal are getting sharper game by game and normally handle the smaller teams quite well
  • Arsenal should win this one easily enough

Andy’s bets: Arsenal win | Arsenal 2-0 | Sanchez first goalscorer | Ramsey anytime goalscorer
You say: Arsenal win | Arsenal 3-1 | Sanchez first goalscorer | Oxlade-Chamberlain anytime goalscorer

RESULT: Andy 1 You 1
