The shock 25/1 anytime goalscorer being backed to make life difficult for Manchester United and Louis van Gaal

by Aidan Elder | September 14, 2014

Four games in to the new season and United are still hunting for that first win. You know things are bad when Newcastle fans are pointing out you’re only ahead of them on goal difference. But a home game to QPR is the ideal time to get the ball rolling. Isn’t it? That’s what we said about the visit of Swansea just about a month ago.

A lot of the attention will focus upon United’s expensive and high-profile new recruits – Angel Di Maria, Ramadel Falcao and Daley Blind face the pressure of kick-starting United’s season. The Colombian striker is by far the best backed option in both the First Goalscorer and Anytime Goalscorer betting, but not far behind them on the list is a name far more familiar to United fans.

Rio Ferdinand is a hugely popular option upon his return to Old Trafford, particularly in the Anytime Goalscorer betting where he’s a huge 25/1 to deliver in front of the fans who once adored him. Despite knocking in some crucial goals for the Reds, Rio finished up with a grand total of eight goals from over 450 Manchester United, hardly marking out as a stand-out option.

But the story of the hero returning to the venue which defined his career seems to have captured the imagination of both QPR fans and the sizeable contingent of ABUs still out there. Should Rio get on the scoresheet, it would mean a huge payout in the market for Paddy Power. The most popular Anytime Goalscorer bets are:

  • #1 Falcao
  • #2 Wayne Rooney
  • #3 Rio Ferdinand

Rio also features surprisingly prominently in the First Goalscorer betting. He’s 80/1 to bag the first goal of the game and despite those sizeable odds, a large number of Paddy Power customers have had a nibble at the price including three punters who have a fairly ballsy £20 bet on it. Falcao is by far and away the most popular First Goalscorer bet, but it’s Rio who’ll do the real damage to the Paddy Power coffers if he can deliver – particularly with Falcao starting on the bench.

Elsewhere, despite the struggles, United are well fancied to win and to win comfortably. That’s reflected in the Correct Score betting. The most popular bets all strongly favour an easy win for the hosts, somewhat flying in the face of the evidence of United’s performance so far this season. The top three options are:

  • #1 United 3-0
  • #2 United 4-0
  • #3 United 3-1

It’s all pointing towards a United win, but based on their form this season, it wouldn’t be a surprise if United still didn’t know their Rs from their elbow.

Will it be a Red letter day for Rio’s return to Old Trafford?
