Andy Gray: Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea will deliver, but Liverpool are far from bankers

by Aidan Elder | September 26, 2014

Ouch. What a weekend that was. Tough for the punters is putting it mildy. Manchester United lose, Liverpool lose, City and Chelsea draw – it’s the worst kicking we’ve seen someone take since Jay-Z got into that lift with Beyonce’s sister.

Picking winners was tough last weekend, but Andy Gray managed to scrape together slightly more than the Paddy Power punters so he extends his lead in the competition. Don’t worry, it’s a marathon, not a sprint. And even if we lose that marathon, we’re pretty sure Andy doesn’t know how the internet works and we’ll edit the results to make it look like we won.

So, after five weeks of pitting Andy Gray’s predictions against yours and asking ‘Are You* Smarter Than Andy Gray? (*You plural)’, the scores on the e-doors are:

Andy Gray 32 – 24 You* (*you plural)

One point is awarded per correct prediction, regardless of the odds associated with it, so it’s time to start reeling in that lead.

It’s the same story once again – we pit the prediction abilities of the Graymeister (he hates that name) against the most popular bet among the Paddy Power customers and see who is smarter. Well, we probably know who is smarter because none of the Paddy Power customers lost their cushy punditry job for making sexually inappropriate remarks, but we want to see who can give Premier League betting tips. Keep reading for this week’s throwing shit at a wall and seeing what sticks well thought-out predictions.

Andy’s weekend treble: Chelsea (v Aston Villa), Manchester United (v West Ham) and Arsenal (v Tottenham) all to win – 19/10

You say: Chelsea (v Aston Villa), Manchester United (v West Ham) and Manchester City (v Hull) all to win – 8/5

RESULT: ANDY 0 YOU 1

—————————————————————

Liverpool v Everton
Anfield, Saturday 12.45 – BT Sports 1

Huge game. Neither team setting the world alight and both looking very shaky at the back.

Andy says:

  • Liverpool are nowhere near their best form. Finding goals harder to come by this season which exposes a defence that is far from watertight.
  • History and current form are against Everton at Anfield. Martinez needs to shore up the defence without sacrificing the Toffees’ style.
  • Really tough game to call. There will be goals and it will end in a draw.

Andy’s bets: Draw | 2-2 Draw | Lukaku 1st Goalscorer

You say: Everton | 2-2 Draw | Balotelli 1st Goalscorer

RESULT: ANDY 1 YOU 0

—————————————————————–

Chelsea v Aston Villa
Stamford Bridge, Saturday 3pm

Jose has Chelsea boxing clever and doing what they need to do. Villa are coming back down to earth.

Andy says:

  • The Blues are playing too well to slip up here
  • Villa’s smash and grab style is suited to this kind of game, but it won’t be enough here
  • Chelsea are a banker

Andy’s bets: Chelsea to win

You say: Chelsea to win

RESULT: ANDY 1 YOU 1

——————————————————————

Crystal Palace v Leicester
Selhurst Park, Saturday 3pm

The Foxes had an outstanding result last weekend, but Palace have been making progress.

————————————————————-

Hull v Man City
KC Stadium, Saturday 3pm

Hull haven’t won since the opening day of the season. City haven’t won in three, but faced Chelsea and Arsenal in the last two weeks, so it’s possibly more excusable.

Andy says:

  • No reason to go against City in this one. They’re the better team by a distance
  • Hull have started the season well, but they won’t be able to contain City
  • Away win

Andy’s bets: City to win

You say:  City to win

RESULT: ANDY 1 YOU 1

————————————————————-

Man Utd v West Ham
Old Trafford, Saturday 3pm

Leicester gave Louis van Gaal a wake up call after United signed some big names. West Ham will fancy it after beating Liverpool well.

Andy says:

  • United can look irresistible going forward, but without the ball look vulnerable
  • West Ham have nothing to fear. Big Sam will have noted where United have problems and will target those areas
  • West Ham will score, but United have enough class to see them through

Andy’s bets: United to win | United 2-1 | Falcao 1st Goalscorer

You say: West Ham to win | United 3-1 | Falcao 1st Goalscorer

 RESULT: ANDY 1 YOU 0

Southampton v QPR
St Mary’s, Saturday 3pm

Southampton are flying high after a summer of changes. QPR are already locked in the relegation scrap.

Andy says:

  • Southampton have been very impressive so far this season
  • Nothing to suggest QPR will be able to shock team
  • Can’t see anything other than a Saints’ win

Andy’s bets: Southampton to win

You say: Southampton to win

RESULT: ANDY 1 YOU 1

————————————————————–

Sunderland v Swansea
Stadium of Light, Saturday 3pm

Sunderland find themselves 17th, but they’ve only lost one of their five games. Swansea have lost two on the bounce after starting with three wins.

Andy says:

  • Gus Poyet really needs to get something going for Sunderland in the near future
  • Swansea’s strong start to the season is showing signs of fading away
  • It’ll be tight, but Sunderland will edge it

Andy’s bets: Sunderland to win | Sunderland 1-0

You say: Swansea to win | 2-2 Draw

RESULT: ANDY 0 YOU 0

——————————————————

Arsenal v Tottenham
The Emirates, Saturday 5.30pm – Sky Sports 1

The North London derby rounds off Saturday’s action. Arsenal aren’t bulletproof, but Tottenham have collapsed after a good start.

Andy says:

  • Arsenal caught the eye with how they cruised past Villa
  • Spurs have big problems. They’re not playing well. Pochettino doesn’t know his best team and the players are caught inbetween styles
  • They form book doesn’t always go out the window – Arsenal will win this

Andy’s bets: Arsenal to win | Arsenal 2-1 | Mesut Ozil 1st Goalscorer

You say: Arsenal to win | Arsenal 3-1 | Danny Welbeck 1st Goalscorer

RESULT: ANDY 0 YOU 0

The Hawthorns, Sunday 4pm – Sky Sports 1

The Baggies got their first league win of the season last time out while Burnley are still waiting for theirs

Andy says:

  • West Brom have shown plenty of fighting spirit and look like they’ve found some form
  • Burnley have done alright, but they’re just not sticking their necks out to get the win
  • The Baggies have enough quality to see them through.

Andy’s bets: West Brom to win | Saido Berahino 1st Goalscorer | Stephane Sessegnon anytime goalscorer

You say: West Brom to win | Saido Berahino 1st Goalscorer | Joleon Lescott anytime goalscorer

RESULT: ANDY 1 YOU 1

——————————————————————

Stoke v Newcastle
Britannia Stadium, Monday 8pm – Sky Sports 1

Stoke have been patchy, but Alan Pardew is on the brink after guiding the Magpies to the foot of the table.

Andy says:

  • Stoke’s home form has been a problem so far this season. They’re struggling for goals
  • Newcastle still haven’t won in the league, but they showed fighting spirit last weekend
  • Stoke are due a win at home. This will be it

Andy’s bets: Stoke to win | Stoke 1-0 | Crouch 1st Goalscorer

You say: Stoke to win | Stoke 3-1 | Mame Diouf 1st Goalscorer

RESULT: ANDY 3 YOU 1
