You know how it is. You sit back, relax, take ownership of the remote control and think ‘I fancy a fiver on something here tonight’.
What you generally don’t expect is to nail a 8,099/1 correct-score treble but that’s exactly what one online customer in Dublin did in Tuesday night’s Champions League games.
In a feat of punting that makes Derren Brown look like a three-card trickster he correctly predicted that:
- Bate Borisov would beat Athletic Bilbao 2-1 @ 14/1
- Money bags PSG would down Barcelona’s Messi, Neymar & Co. 3-2 @ 35/1
- Shakhtar Donetsk and Porto would draw 2-2 @ 14/1
And it was the last game that caused our man the most grief.
Shakhtar Donetsk led 2-0 against Porto as the game drifted towards the final whistle.
But Colombian international Jackson Martinez popped up to convert an 89th-minute penalty before firing into the top corner in added time to make it 2-2 and secure the Dubliner’s booty.
And if the treble wasn’t enough he had ‘covered’ his bet with three 3 x €2 doubles (costing €6) to scoop an extra €2,600 on top of his €40,500
That’s €43,100 for 90 minutes work – a deal to turn even Wayne Rooney green with envy.
