The first weekend in October can mean only one thing and that is the Arc. 5/1 the field tells us all we need to know about how competitive this year’s renewal is. The only certainties are the potential for industrial action by the transport workers and that Treve (below) will not retain her title. I wish you all bon chance in finding the winner as my attention lies with Sole Power’s attempt to crown a magnificent season in the Abbaye.

For a bet we head to Ascot. American Hope (Challenge Cup, 15.50) is a very strong traveller. He looked all over a winner at the track two runs ago only to be worried out of things late-on over a mile. A strongly-run seven furlongs look his optimum and that’s just what he gets tomorrow. The slight ease in the ground is not ideal but with the weather seemingly set fair for Saturday he should get away with it and looks a decent bet.
