Celta Vigo had not beaten Barcelona in 45 consecutive La Liga games. They hadn’t won away to Barca since 1942 – years before Camp Nou was even built. Barcelona themselves were coming off the back of defeat in El Clasico, but they hadn’t lost back-to-back La Liga games since May 2009. It’s fair to say not many people could have predicted victory for the visitors on Saturday night.
But while Jack Walton was getting booted off the X Factor, a fellow Yorkshire man was enjoying his Saturday night far more, watching Celta Vigo stun Barca 1-0 on Sky Sports. The punter had £16 on a scorecast of Joaquin Larrivey to score and Celta Vigo to win 1-0 at odds of 550/1, pocketing a grand total of £8,816.
The goal came after 55 minutes in a game Barcelona dominated. The home side had 19 efforts on goal, hitting the woodwork four times and finding Celta keeper Sergio Alvar in inspired form. The goal that decided it wasn’t bad either, following a delightful flick from Nolito.
Take a bow, and welcome to the Punting Hall of Fame good sir. A bet that initially looked ridiculous now looks like a genius gamble.
