Andy Gray: Bank on Liverpool, Arsenal and Man City for this 9/2 treble

Andy Gray isn't all that bad and in fact, he's pretty good at giving Premier League tips

by Andy Gray | November 21, 2014

God we’ve missed you Premier League football. Like a day without sunshine or Take That without Robbie, we can throw our knickers at international football all we want, but our heart’s just not in it the same way it is with you. Although knicker-throwing possibly explains why we’re not allowed into Wembley anymore.

With England cruising to Euro 2016 and all of Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Ireland breaking with tradition and not being out of the running after three, the focus turns back to domestic action and as ever, we’ve expert Scotsman and expert pundit Andy Gray to give us his Premier League tips this weekend. We’re putting them up against the favourite bets of the Paddy Power customers in a sort of ‘betting Hunger Games’ style scenario. The e-scores on the e-doors are:

Andy Gray 68 – 54 You* (*you plural)

One point is awarded per correct prediction, regardless of the odds associated with it, to see who is smarter. Well, we probably know who is smarter because none of the Paddy Power customers lost their cushy punditry job for making sexually inappropriate remarks, but we want to see who can give Premier League betting tips. Keep reading for this week’s throwing shit at a wall and seeing what sticks well thought-out predictions.

Andy’s Saturday treble: Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal all to win – 9/2

You say: Chelsea, Manchester City and Newcastle all to win – 11/5

RESULT: Andy 0 | You 1

Chelsea v West Brom
Saturday 3pm

We’ve already paid out on Chelsea to win the Premier League, but they’re still going to have to fulfill their fixtures. First up, what looks to be a tap-in at home to West Brom.

Andy says:

  • Chelsea are running away with it, but they’re only just getting over the line in some games
  • If West Brom are well organised, they can frustrate them, but it won’t be enough
  • No doubt that Chelsea will win

Andy’s bets: Chelsea to win | Chelsea 3-0 | Chelsea to win to nil | Hazard first goalscorer
You say: Chelsea to win | Chelsea 3-0 | Chelsea to win to nil | Diego Costa first goalscorer

RESULT: Andy 2 | You 3

Everton v West Ham
Saturday 3pm

Two teams that struggled early on, but look to have turned the corner.

Andy says:

  • Everton’s home form is a bit of a puzzler. I’m a little bit concerned with that.
  • West Ham have been sensational since losing to Manchester United. They should fancy their chances.
  • The Toffees will concede, but they’ll come out on top

Andy’s bet
: Everton to win | Everton 2-1

You say:  West Ham to win | West Ham 2-1

RESULT: Andy 2 | You 0

Leicester v Sunderland
Saturday 3pm

A promising start has come to a shuddering halt for Leicester. Sunderland are patchy though.

Andy says:

  • Leicester are in freefall after the heights of beating Manchester United.
  • Sunderland have been getting better. Only slightly better, but it’s progress.
  • Sunderland are capable of winning, but I’ll plump for the draw.

Andy’s bet:
Draw | 1-1 Draw

You say:  Sunderland to win | Sunderland 2-1

RESULT: Andy 1 | You 0

Manchester City v Swansea
Saturday 3pm

The defending champions have stumbled through the start of their title defence. Will Swansea force another slip-up?

Andy says:

  • This is a game City need because Swansea will try to play football, which will play into their hands.
  • Swansea are still playing attractive football and will cause City problems.
  • City are due a performance. They’ll win comfortably enough.

Andy’s bet
:  City to win | City to win 3-1

You say:  City to win | City to win 3-1

RESULT: Andy 1 | You 1

Newcastle v QPR
Saturday 3pm

Alan Pardew is a managerial god once again. How long will it last?

Andy says:

  • Newcastle are flying, but they haven’t been scoring many at home.
  • QPR have been good at home, but their away form is shocking.
  • Newcastle will win this.

Andy’s bet
:  Newcastle to win | Newcastle 2-0

You say:  Newcastle to win | Newcastle 3-1

RESULT: Andy 1 | You 1

Stoke v Burnley

Saturday 3pm

Mark Hughes has got Stoke moving in the right direction. So has Sean Dyche, but there’s lots more to be done for the Clarets.

Andy says:

  • Stoke look to be coming together as a team.
  • Burnley will have gained confidence from finally getting a league win.
  • Goals will be in short supply here, but Stoke will get one to win it.

Andy’s bet
:  Stoke to win | Stoke 1-0
You say: Stoke to win | Stoke 2-0

RESULT: Andy 0 | You 0

Arsenal v Manchester United
Saturday, 5.30pm, Sky Sports 1

This would formerly have huge implications on the title race. Probably won’t this year to be fair, but it’s a tasty game nonetheless.

Andy says:

  • Arsenal have been unreliable at home this season and they really need to beat a big team.
  • United haven’t won on the road this season. That’s a big concern here.
  • Both defences are suspect, but Arsenal will shade it.

Andy’s betArsenal to win | Arsenal 3-2 | Alexis Sanchez 1st Goalscorer | Ramsey anytime

You say: Arsenal to win | Arsenal 2-1 | Alexis Sanchez 1st Goalscorer | Alexis Sanchez anytime

RESULT: Andy 0 | You 0

Crystal Palace v Liverpool
Sunday 1.30pm

A few months on from that 3-3 epic, both teams are in very different situations. Who’ll come out on top?

Andy says:

  • Liverpool’s form is poor, but they’ve got class to call upon.
  • Palace have had their ‘new manager bounce’ and Palace will find it tougher in future.
  • I fancy Liverpool strongly here

Andy’s bet:  Liverpool to win | Liverpool 2-0 | Rickie Lambert 1st Goalscorer (if he starts) | Sterling anytime

You say: Crystal Palace to win | Liverpool 2-1 | Steven Gerrard 1st Goalscorer | Hangeland anytime

RESULT: Andy 1 | You 1

Hull v Tottenham
Sunday 4pm

Despite the changes, Tottenham look unreliable but Hull have hit a rocky patch all of their own too.

Andy says:

  • Hull are struggling and I’m not sure how Steve Bruce will shake it up.
  • I’ve no idea what we’re going to get from Tottenham here. They’re so unpredictable.
  • I’ve got an inkling Tottenham will come good, but I’ll go with the draw

Andy’s bet: Draw | 1-1 Draw | Diame 1st Goalscorer

You say: Tottenham to win | Tottenham 3-1 | Chadli 1st Goalscorer

RESULT: Andy 0 | You 1

Aston Villa v Southampton
Monday 8pm, Live, Sky Sports 1

Villa are without a win in seven games, while Southampton have been even more sensational than last season’s sensational season.

Andy says:

  • I can’t see where the goals are coming from with Villa.
  • Southampton’s defence has been excellent. They’ll keep Villa at bay.
  • Southampton will get an away win.

Andy’s bet: Southampton | Southampton 2-0 | Long 1st Goalscorer

You say: Southampton | Southampton 3-1 | Long 1st Goalscorer

RESULT: Andy 0 | You 0
