Manchester United v Liverpool: Find out just how many punters are backing Louis van Gaal’s side at Old Trafford

We delve into Paddy Power's book to find out where your money is going ahead of Liverpool's trip to Manchester United, and a lot is heading towards the home side. A hell of a lot.

by Josh Powell | December 14, 2014

Sunday morning, and what better way to blow away those hangover cobwebs than one of the fiercest derbies in top flight football, where we expect no less than bone-crunching late tackles, plenty of handbags, and a capacity crowd baying for blood. Oh and hopefully some goals. Goals would be super.

The Sky Sports hyperbole machine has been on full force since November building up to Man United’s home clash with Liverpool, and we’ve done our fair share of coverage to help out your punting.

If that’s not enough we’re also delving into Paddy Power’s book to find out where our lovely punters are putting their cash, and which side they need to come out on top to boost the Christmas fund.

If Delia Smith worked in Power Tower, presumably she would be standing over my shoulder as I type this yelling, ‘Where are you? Lets be ‘avin you. Why is the vending machine broken?’ Liverpool fans are commonly an optimistic breed, however even the most loyal Reds aren’t steaming into a Liverpool victory this afternoon.

Manchester United are the 5/6 favourites for the game after Louis Van Gaal’s side made it five wins on the spin with a 2-1 victory over Southampton. OK, so a couple of those performances may not have been entirely convincing, but there’s a W in the form box and points on the board. Liverpool’s recent form isn’t so pretty – winning just two of the last nine games in all competitions, and losing 60 per cent of their away games this season. No wonder then, they’re the 7/2 outsiders.

Unsurprisingly just 2 per cent of punters are backing the draw, presumably because Paddy is a bumbling fool super-generous chap, he’s giving you your cash back if you back either side and the game finishes in a draw. Zip-a-dee-doo-dah indeed.

In the correct score market four of the five most popular results are swinging in Manchester United’s favour, with the most popular being a 2-1 victory for the home side. The Gaal-acticos have already won 2-1 five times in the league this season and if you stuck £5 on them to win 2-1 in every single league game so far, you’d have a tasty little profit of £148 in your back pocket. Another 2-1 victory is a 7/1 shot this afternoon.

Robin van Persie notched a brace against Southampton and punters are jumping on the Dutchman kick-starting a hot streak in front of goal. Nearly half of the cash in the first goalscorer book is on RVP who is a 9/2 shot to score the first goal of the game. Notably one man in the book has stuck £20 on Kolo Toure to open the scoring at 50/1. We admire your cajones mystery mad man.

Are the Paddy Power punters the sharpest tool in the betting box? If you think so it’s 25/1 for Van Persie to score first and Man Utd to beat Liverpool 2-1. A punt even we’re tempted to get involved in.
