Take a bow Andy Lee. You can now take your place as one of Limerick’s greatest exports, alongside huge names like Jerry Flannery, The Cranberries and jolly old President Michael D. Higgins.
This thumping right hook from the Irishman not only mangled Matt Korobov’s brain, it secured Lee the WBO middleweight title – and he became the first Irishman to win a world title in the division for 20 years.
The first few rounds were cagey, with the Russian Korobov possibly shading the early stages, but nothing could prepare him for that crushing right blow in the sixth round. The 30-year-old followed up with a quick flurry of punches, and that gave referee Kenny Bayliss no choice to step in and stop the fight.
Lee’s victory means that Ireland have another boxing World Champion, and a home fight to defend his title is rumored to be on the cards. Katie Taylor, Conor McGregor, Sheamus and Andy Lee. the fighting Irish are on the up!
