ANDY GRAY: Manchester United, City, Chelsea and Spurs will make sure Yule be in the money this weekend

Are you smarter than Andy Gray? Yes, but now you need to prove it by picking more Premier League winners than him.

by Aidan Elder | December 19, 2014

Andy Gray had a good week last week. His treble came up; he extended his lead in his Hunger Games type scenario with the best bets of the Paddy Power customers; he didn’t get sacked from any of his media gigs – sweet. When we went through all the prediction and at the end of it all, the e-scores on the e-doors are:

Andy Gray 87 – 75 You* (*you plural)

Heading into the festive season of excessive eating and socially acceptable alcoholism, we’ve got a good set of games to sink our soothsaying teeth in to. And by which we mean Liverpool will probably lose to Arsenal, Manchester United’s not exactly convincing bubble could pop at Aston Villa and there’s all the drama excitement and horse-punching of the Tyne-Wear derby.

So here we go again. The game is simples. One point is awarded per correct prediction, regardless of the odds associated with it and as we go, we add them all up to see who is smarter. Well, we probably know who is smarter because none of the Paddy Power customers lost their cushy punditry job for making sexually inappropriate remarks, but we want to see who can give the best Premier League betting tips. Keep reading for this week’s throwing shit at a wall and seeing what sticks well thought-out predictions.

Andy’s treble: Manchester City (v Palace), Tottenham (v Burnley) and West Ham (v Leicester) – 9/4

You say: Manchester City (v Palace), Tottenham (v Burnley) and Manchester United (v Villa) – 2/1

Manchester City v Crystal Palace
Saturday 12.45pm, BT Sport

The champions are starting to play like it. Neil Warnock’s side are playing well but should probably start picking up some points fairly soon.

Andy says:

  • City huffed and puffed against Leicester but got the result. That’s what top teams do.
  • Palace might benefit from a shortage of fit strikers for City.
  • Class will show though and City will get the win.

Andy’s bets: Manchester City to win | City 2-0 | David Silva 1st Goalscorer
You say: Manchester City | City 3-1 | James Milner 1st Goalscorer

RESULT: ANDY 2 | YOU 1

Aston Villa v Manchester United
Saturday 3pm

United keep on rumbling on. In the most unconvincing way possible. It’ll all be fine because Aston Villa aren’t very reliable.

Andy says:

  • It’s one of United’s favourite places to visit. United will concede – defence is a problem.
  • Villa can cause United problems, especially Benteke
  • The visitors will get through the test and claim all three points.

Andy’s bet
: Manchester United | Manchester United 3-1 | Van Persie 1st Goalscorer
You say:  Manchester United | Manchester United 3-1 | Rooney 1st Goalscorer

RESULT: ANDY 0 | YOU 0

Hull v Swansea
Saturday 3pm

Hull have plummeted into the relegation zone and haven’t won in nine attempts. Can they clip the Swans’ wings or some other shit pun?

Andy says:

  • Hull are desperate for a win. This is the right game for them.
  • Swansea are nice to watch, but they struggle away from home.
  • The Tigers will get the win they need

Andy’s bet:
 Hull to win
You say: Swansea

RESULT: ANDY 0 | YOU 1

QPR v West Brom
Saturday 3pm

QPR could actually overtake West Brom with a win here. As long as it’s by five goals. That may not happen, but they could drag the Baggies right into trouble.

Andy says:

  • QPR’s home form is really strong, despite their league position
  • West Brom won the derby last weekend, but weren’t very impressive
  • The Rs will keep up their good home form.

Andy’s bet: QPR to win
You say: QPR to win

RESULT: ANDY 1 | YOU 1

Southampton v Everton
Saturday 3pm

We’re predicting this game will be a thing of beauty. We’ve no idea who’ll win here because both teams are about as reliable as a celebrity marriage.

Andy says:

  • Southampton have been on a dreadful run.
  • Everton have strated to get results, but aren’t playing too well.
  • It’ll be close and the hosts will edge it.

Andy’s bet: Southampton to win
You say: Everton to win

RESULT: ANDY 1 | YOU 0

Tottenham v Burnley

Saturday 3pm

Spurs won last weekend. Away from home?! Wow. That’s great. Probably means they’ll draw at home to an improving Burnley.

Andy says:

  • Spurs will take great confidence from thumping Newcastle midweek
  • Burnley have improved but not enough to win this
  • Spurs will record another win

Andy’s bet: Tottenham to win
You say: Tottenham to win

RESULT: ANDY 1 | YOU 1

West Ham v Leicester
Saturday, 3pm

Santa isn’t the only fat jolly man hanging around this Christmas. A win over the Foxes will see Big Sam’s team in the Champions League places heading into the Yuletide fixtures.

Andy says:

  • West Ham still going along really well. If they avoid an injury crisis, it can carry on a while yet
  • In freefall. Not playing too badly, but not getting results.
  • A home win all day long

Andy’s bet: West Ham to win
You say: West Ham to win

RESULT: ANDY 1 | YOU 1

Newcastle v Sunderland
Sunday 1.30pm, Sky Sports 1

Lock up your horses – it’s the Tyne-Wear Derby.

Andy says:

  • Based on form, you’d go with Newcastle, but it’s not that simple.
  • Sunderland aren’t creating enough chances to win it.
  • Tight, nervy game which the hosts will edge

Andy’s bet: Newcastle to win | Newcastle 1-0 | Cisse 1st Goalscorer
You say: Sunderland to win | Sunderland 3-0 | Colback 1st Goalscorer

RESULT: ANDY 0 | YOU 1

Liverpool v Arsenal
Sunday 4pm, Sky Sports 1

Brendan Rodgers attempts to get some festive cheers against an Arsenal team that is playing reasonably well. Good luck with that.

Andy says:

  • Don’t take too much from Liverpool’s win over Bournemouth
  • If Arsenal can keep Sterling under wraps, they’ve got a chance
  • It’ll be an open game, but we won’t have a winner

Andy’s bet: Draw | Draw 2-2 | Sterling 1st Goalscorer
You say: Arsenal to win | Arsenal 3-1 | Giroud 1st Goalscorer

RESULT: ANDY 2 | YOU 0

Stoke v Chelsea
Monday 8pm, Sky Sports 1

Chelsea look like champions elect, but can they do it on a cold night in Stoke? On a Monday? Before Christmas? In the year 2014? We’ll soon find out.

Andy says:

  • Stoke won’t intimidate Chelsea like they do other teams
  • Chelsea can cope with Stoke’s physicality.
  • The Blues will get the job done, just about.

Andy’s bet: Chelsea to win | Chelsea 1-0 | Costa 1st Goalscorer
You say: Chelsea to win | Chelsea 2-1 | Costa 1st Goalscorer

RESULT: ANDY 1 | YOU 1
