Twitter is alight with tributes for Steven Gerrard after he announces Anfield departure

by Rob Dore | January 3, 2015

As Liverpool’s captain announced his departure from the club after 25 years the focus is no longer on his rapid decline in form and relevance this season. Instead it has shifted, at least temporarily, to the great things he has achieved during his time at Anfield.

34 is hardly ancient in modern football but after a decade of carrying mediocre Liverpool teams to FA Cups, League Cups and Champions League glory he has looked worn down this season. How much of that is the mental effect of last season’s slip we can’t know but a move to the MLS could breath new life into his career, as it did with David Beckham, Robbie Keane and Thierry Henry.

Liverpool fans will feel a mixture of sadness and relief. Sad to see a great player go, relief because the team has started having to carry him.

Here is one of the better hastily cobbled together Youtube compilations to stir up a little Gerrard related nostalgia. Chosen almost entirely for it’s lack of terrible dance music.

And now here are some of the Twitter responses from former team-mates, ex-Reds and assorted famous folk.

Luis Suarez opens his mouth and it’s not to bite someone or utter something potentially racist:

The Spanish waiter who helped serve up Gerrard’s crowning achievement:

Xabi Alonso keeps it as classy as ever..

No man owes Gerrard more than Djimi.

It’s Franco Baresi, I mean, that’s like being praised by Moses.

Former women’s tennis world number 1 Caroline Wozniacki took some time out from cyber-stalking Rory McIlroy to praise the soon to be departing Liverpool captain:

Former Reds players wade in with praise:

Finally, Alistair Campbell trying to be funny but sounding like a bit of a d*ck.

Steven Gerrard’s next club betting:

LA Galaxy – 2/9
New York Red Bulls – 9/2
New York City FC – 6/1
