Andy Gray: Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United can deliver a 7/2 treble this weekend

by Andy Gray | January 16, 2015

Welcome back for another edition of Are You Smarter Than Andy Gray? The world’s favourite competition that pits the Paddy Power customers’ betting prowess against the Premier League predictions of football punditry legend, Andrew Mullen Gray. In fact, it’s the world’s only competition that pits the Paddy Power customers’ betting prowess against the Premier League predictions of football punditry legend, Andrew Mullen Gray

Last week was less than stellar in terms of tipping. You plural were quite unlucky with the Arsenal v Stoke predictions. Your 3-1 scoreline and Alexis Sanchez 1st Goalscorer picks rattled the metaphorical crossbar and could have helped closed the gap to our favourite former Sky Sports pundit. At the same time, Andy saved some of his credibility bacon by landing a sweet 5/2 treble. Mmmmmm … credibility bacon. After all that, it means the e-scores on the e-doors are:

Andy Gray 112 – 98 You* (*you plural)

So here we go again. The game is simples. One point is awarded per correct prediction, regardless of the odds associated with it and as we go, we add them all up to see who is smarter. Well, we probably know who is smarter because none of the Paddy Power customers lost their cushy punditry job for making sexually inappropriate remarks, but we want to see who can give the best Premier League betting tips. Once more into the crystal-ball gazing.

Aston Villa v Liverpool
Saturday, 3pm

The Reds continued their fragile renaissance last week. You’re never quite sure what you’ll get from Villa.

Andy says:

  • Talk of protests before the game by the home fans
  • Liverpool have a good record at Villa Park
  • Steven Gerrard loves scoring against the Villains

Andy’s bets: Liverpool to win

QPR v Manchester United

Saturday, 3pm

United’s unconvincing unbeaten run came to an end against Southampton and as QPR are at home, this isn’t a gimme for LVG’s team.

Andy says:

  • I expect a response from United after last week’s home loss to Southampton
  • QPR are decent at home but LVG’s side should be too strong

Andy’s bet: Man United to win

Burnley v Crystal Palace

Saturday, 3pm

Two wins for the two lower part of the table sluggers last weekend. The right result for either team here could really inflate the over-optimistic opinions about their chances of survival.

Andy says:

  • Burnley looked to have turned the corner
  • Alan Pardew has lifted the Eagles since he arrived

Andy’s bet: Draw
You say: Crystal Palace

Leicester v Stoke
Saturday, 3pm

Leicester dominated Villa last weekend and deserved the three points while Stoke were as poor as I’ve seen them this season against Arsenal.

Andy’s bet: Draw
You say: Stoke to win

Swansea v Chelsea
Saturday 3pm

Swansea must adjust to life without Wilfried Bony now he’s gone to Manchester City. Chelsea can go for the jugular.

Tottenham v Sunderland

Saturday, 3pm

Spurs season isn’t as bad as everyone seems to think and are still pushing for a Champions League spot. Sunderland don’t score enough goals

Newcastle v Southampton
Saturday, 5.30pm Sky Sports 1

The Saints come here on the back of a great win at Old Trafford while Newcastle were unlucky against Chelsea although they’ve only one win in eight games in all comps.

Andy’s bet: Draw
You say: Southampton to win

West Ham v Hull
Sunday, 1.30pm Sky Sports 1

West Ham haven’t won in four league games, but haven’t played badly. Hull are up and down like one of those guys who pushes the buttons in a lift in one of those posh hotels.

Andy says:

  • West Ham had to go deep to beat Everton in the FA Cup
  • Hull can upset teams but their form is patchy recently
  • I still fancy the Hammers strongly to win

Manchester City v Arsenal
Sunday, 4pm Sky Sports 1

The last time Arsenal won at City in the league, it was with a team featuring Andrei Arshavin, Denilson and Squillaci. And Nicklas Bendtner scored four minutes after coming off the bench.

Andy says:

  • We’re going to learn a lot about what Arsenal are made of in this contest
  • The Gunners have picked up 12 points from 15 in their last five league games
  • Manchester City are so good at home – bar that Stoke defeat – I can’t see them losing this despite Yaya Toure’s absence

Andy’s bet: Man City to win

Everton v West Brom
Monday, 8pm Sky Sports 1

Everton have won just once since the end of November. They did draw with Man City last weekend, but a Pulis-ified West Brom are going to put it up to their beautiful football.

Andy says:

  • Roberton Martinez needs to get three points on the board quickly
  • They’ve started to get the ball forward quicker to Romelu Lukaku which is helping
  • Tony Pulis has made a decent start but Everton should be too strong

Andy’s bet: Everton to win
