Were it not for Arsene Wenger’s shock decision to use nullifying tactics away from home to a Premier League giant, and get a result, or for Kevin Mirallas’ bizarre idea that he was better at spot-kicks than the ever-reliable Leighton Baines, Paddy Power wouldn’t have a shirt on his back this morning.
And we can promise you, that’s not a sight you want to see in a hurry.
On Saturday six of the seven Premier League favourites came good – with the only exception being Stoke’s win away to Leicester, and even then the Foxes were only marginally favoured by the traders. West Ham followed that by obliging for favourite-backers on Sunday by hammering a sorry Hull, to make it seven winning favourites from the 10 Premier League games. Throw in a whole-host of well-fancied sides coming good in the Championship, and the boss was staring at one hell of a spanking.
We’d like to tell you how much the weekend’s football cost Paddy, but the bean-counters are already dangerously close to a minor heart-attack. What we can tell you is that it was a pretty massive figure.
One bet which summed up the weekend was this piece of inspired punting from one of our online customers in Cardiff. Not only did he have a whole host of football favourites in his 12-fold accumulator, he also had Arsenal to beat Man City at the Etihad Stadium. That alone was well worth the £12k payout, plus his £1,000 bonus courtesy of Paddy Power’s Acca Bonus.
On weekend’s like this, that bonus doesn’t look like such a smart move anymore…
Unfortunately for shareholders there is potential for more misery down the line this weekend with the FA Cup. In total 11 Premier League sides are taking on lower-league opposition, providing plenty of short-prices to kick-start your accumulators.
The boss is bracing himself, for another apocalyptic weekend of punting.
