Andy Gray: Your cup will runneth over with Andy’s Southampton, Arsenal and Man City treble at 11/5

by Andy Gray | January 23, 2015

Welcome back for a special FA Cup edition of Are You Smarter Than Andy Gray? The world’s favourite competition that pits the Paddy Power customers’ betting prowess against the cup predictions of football punditry legend, Andrew Mullen Gray. In fact, it’s the world’s only competition that pits the Paddy Power customers’ betting prowess against the predictions of football punditry legend, Andrew Mullen Gray.

Last week was a solid one for the Paddy Power punters as they closed the gap thanks largely to most of the favourites delivering wins. Except for Manchester City who finally let Arsenal feel like they’re capable of beating a big team away from home. That’s nice of them. So, after all that, the e-scores on the e-doors are:

Andy Gray 119 – 108 You* (*you plural)

So here we go again. The game is simples. One point is awarded per correct prediction, regardless of the odds associated with it and as we go, we add them all up to see who is smarter. Well, we probably know who is smarter because none of the Paddy Power customers lost their cushy punditry job for making sexually inappropriate remarks, but we want to see who can give the best FA Cup betting tips this weekend. Once more into the crystal-ball gazing.

Andy’s treble: Man City, Liverpool and Arsenal -11/5

You say: Arsenal, Chelsea and Sunderland – 19/10

RESULT: Andy 0 You 0

Cambridge United v Manchester United
Friday, 7.55pm BBC One

League Two mid-tablers welcome Premier League giants – not even Louis van Gaal could oversee a slip up here, could he?

Andy says:

  • United to improve on poor performance against Yoevil in the last round
  • Expects Van Gaal to play a full strength side.
  • United strikers to impress.

Andy’s bets: Manchester United
You say: Manchester United

RESULT: Andy 0 You 0

Blackburn v Swansea

Saturday, 12.45pm, BBC2

We’re not quite sure why this is a TV game, but even though they’re mid-table in the Championship, Rovers will make it tough for Swansea.

Andy says:

  • Swansea weakened by loss of Bony
  • Visitors on poor run of form
  • Rovers are hot and cold this season

Andy’s bet: Draw
You say:  Swansea

RESULT: Andy 0 You 0

Man City v Middlesbrough
Saturday, 3pm

Man City won’t be happy about losing at home to Arsenal. Boro may bare the brunt. Poor Boro.

Andy says:

  • City to field a strong side with no games for a week
  • Home side looking to prove a point after defeat to Arsenal

Andy’s bet: Man City
You say: Man City

RESULT: Andy 0 You 0

Southampton v Crystal Palace
Saturday, 3pm

Alan Pardew may be more focussed on the league, in particular overtaking Newcastle. Southampton had their dip in form but are back on course to embarass everyone who scoffed at their top four chances. Basically everyone who isn’t a Southampton fan.

Andy says:

Palace have reacted very well to the appointment of Pardew
Southampton are back in great form after three tough away wins
Saints’ extra quality to edge it

Andy’s bet: Southampton

You say: Southampton

RESULT: Andy 0 You 0

Tottenham Hotspur v Leicester
Saturday 3pm

It’s not like Spurs don’t have a ton of options should Mauricio Pochettino want to rest players for this game. The problem is most of the squad players have struggled like Mario Balotelli putting on a training bib. It’s entertaining to watch for non-Spurs fans but does it open the door for a Leicester side in reasonably good form?

Andy says:
Spurs’ focus will be on Sheff Utd on Wednesday
Pochettino might play a weakened side
Leicester have won 3 of last 5

RESULT: Andy 0 You 0

Liverpool v Bolton
Saturday, 5.30pmBT Sports 1

Looking back to thwe form which brought them close to the title last season how will mass changes effect the team’s play? Liverpool face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday and tough to beat Bolton will fancy their chances of an Anfield upset if the home side’s focus is elsewhere.

Andy says:
2nd leg against Chelsea on Tuesday to take priority for Rodgers
Bolton are tough to beat under Neil Lennon

Bristol City v West Ham
Sunday 2pm, BBC1

Sam Allardyce’s cabinet trophy isn’t exactly brimming but he’ll fancy going all the way in this competition with his current squad. League one Bristol City will fancy their chances and may spend large periods of the game looking like Premier League side.

Andy says:
West Ham are taking this competition seriously
Bristol have won 10 of last 12 but should struggle against a full-strength West Ham

RESULT: Andy 1 You 1

Aston Villa v Bournemouth
Sunday 3pm, Setanta

It’s looking increasingly likely that these two teams could swap divisions come May. How Paul Lambert must wish the season ended after five games.

Andy says:

  • Villa struggled to beat Blackpool in last round
  • Bournemouth in excellent form, full of confidence
  • A goal for the visitors should secure at least a draw

RESULT: Andy 0 You 0

Brighton v Arsenal
Sunday 4pmBT Sports 1

A new manager has brought new fortunes for the Seagulls but even if Arsene Wenger makes several changes he has a nearly fully fit squad to choose from.

Andy says:

  • Brighton boosted by the arrival of Chris Hughton
  • Arsenal have quality players returning from injury who should feature

RESULT: Andy 1 You 1

Rochdale v Stoke

Well suited to a gritty battle with lower league opponents the Potters won’t fear a trip to Spotland Stadium.
