It looks like something straight out of Stupid Punt but one canny Scottish punter had Paddy’s pants well and truly down on Saturday afternoon in a day of FA Cup carnage.
The new accout holder – placing just his second bet with Paddy Power – won £31k off a £5 acca (below) with some inspired punting and some crazy results.
Scottish champions Celtic (1/6f) – the shortest-priced team in his five-fold – needed Kris Commons’ 52-minute winner away to Ross County in their 12.45pm kick-off to ensure the bet was still live – ahead of three FA Cup ties and Hearts v Falkirk at 3pm.
It all looked to be going downhill for our Scottish friend as his £0.83 rollover profit from Celtic’s victory looked doomed as Gary Cahill and Ramires put the Premier League table toppers Chelsea 2-0 up at home to Bradford.
But with John Stead’s 41st-minute equaliser for the side who sit 49 places below the Blues in the English league – things quickly began to snowball.
The Bantams added a further three goals without reply to run out 4-2 winners against Jose Mourinho’s (below) side.
Meanwhile,Chelsea’s on loan striker Patrick Bamford had given Middlesbrough the lead against Manchester City at the Etihad and it was game on. With Manuel Pellegrini’s side fighting for their their FA Cup lives – Kike took advantage of an AWOL defence to add a second in the 92nd minute.
The punting avalanche was about to smother Paddy.
Alan Pardew’s Crystal Palace brought up leg number four as they twice came from behind to beat Southampton 3-2 at St Mary’s.
And it was only fitting that the monster punt ended where it started four hours before.
Falkirk’s Craig Sibbald’s 80th-minute strike secured a 3-2 victory to inflict Hearts’ first league defeat in the Scottish Championship and ensure a £31k payout (including a £1k max bonus) for our pal.
