Liverpool to lose 3-0 to West Ham and Villa to beat Arsenal 3-1?! Here are your craziest bets of the week

We dig into Paddy Power's Premier League book to find out the craziest bets punters have had on the weekend's games

by Josh Powell | January 30, 2015

The Stupid Punt section of the Blog is all about highlighting some of those loopy-looking bets at monster odds. All that’s required to make them click is a little bit of brains, a little bit of balls and a massive dollop of luck. If you never have a dream, how will you ever have a dream come true? And here on the Paddy Power Blog we’re all dreamers.

There’s a place in the Punting Hall of Fame at stake if you can pull it off. You are the people who make the crazy look inspired and while you have the bravery to toe the line between ridiculous and optimistic, we can only stand back and applaud.

Here are three of the most outrageous bets we’ve dug out of Paddy’s Premier League book this week and a few stats to try to back them up.

Scorecast: Andy Carroll to score first and West Ham to beat Liverpool 3-0
One punter has £2 on at 375/1

  • In 128 meetings with Liverpool, West Ham have won 3-0 just once. That was in May 1995 when a strike from Matty Homes and a brace from Don Hutchinson gave the Hammers the win
  • Carroll has five goals from just 35 attempts this season, giving him a conversion rate of 14 per cent. Slightly more worrying is just 28 per cent of his shots in the league this season have hit the target
  • The last time Liverpool lost a league game at Anfield 3-0 was, incredibly, April 1965. West Brom were the side to do the damage on Merseyside that day

It has been close to half a century since Liverpool lost a home league game 3-0, but this optimistic Hammer fancies Big Sam Allardyce’s men to do the business on Saturday, and he fancies from Red Andy Carroll to kick-start the rout. Some would say that the law of averages suggests Liverpool are due a 3-0 defeat, right?

Brendan Rodgers Liverpool

Scorecast: Sergio Aguero to score first and Manchester City to beat Chelsea 4-3
One punter is on at 400/1

  • In 152 meetings between Chelsea and Manchester City, the game has never finished 4-3. It has finished 4-2 on five occasions, with City winning three of those games to Chelsea’s two
  • Manchester City have won three Premier League away games 4-3 in their history. They beat Wolves and Sunderland at home, as well as beating Norwich 4-3 away in December 2012. Sergio Aguero scored in that game, adding to a Edin Dzeko brace and a Mark Bunn own goal
  • Sergio Aguero’s 14 goals gives him an average of a goal every 83 minutes this season – that’s a better goal per minute ratio than Diego Costa

Just four sides have scored four or more goals past a Jose Mourinho team – Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund, Tottenham and Bradford – and now this punter thinks Manchester City will add their name to that list. Sergio Aguero is the main man to be on if you fancy City to open the scoring – but a 4-3 win at Stamford Bridge is bordering on the ridiculous.

Arsene Wenger

Scorecast: Nathan Baker to score first and Aston Villa to beat Arsenal 3-1
One punter is on at 1750/1

  • Aston Villa have beaten Arsenal 3-1 away just twice before – once on the opening day of the 2013/14 season when Christian Benteke scored two and Antonio Luna bagged a third. Before that it was at Highbury in 1950 when Johnny Dixon scored twice for Villa and Colin Gibson sealed the win
  • Nathan Baker has made 76 appearances for Aston Villa over the last five seasons and has never scored. In fact, in that time he has managed just 27 shots, and only four of them have found the target
  • Villa have played 27 games in all competitions since they last scored three in a match – that was in a 3-1 win at home to Hull in May 2014. Ashley Westwood scored within a minute and Andi Weimann added two more before the break

There is an optimistic fan, and then there are the odd fans who are just simply deluded. Aston Villa have managed to score just four goals on the road this season, but one punter fancies them to add another three to that tally at the Emirates. The men in white coats are on their way round to collect you pal…
