After 83 minutes at St Mary’s Stadium, Jonjo Shelvey picked up the ball 25 yards from goal, and lashed it past a helpless Fraser Forster. It was Swansea’s first shot on target in the game, ended a four game winless run in the top flight, and gave them their first win at Southampton in 62 years.
But for one Paddy Power punter in Liverpool, most importantly Shelvey’s goal secured him a cheeky £3,251 from a £10 six-fold. It’s the best thing the former-Red has probably ever achieved on Merseyside.
The online punter placed his Premier League accumulator on Saturday lunchtime, and at first everything was going swimmingly. Newcastle began life under John Carver with a 3-0 demolition of last year’s FA Cup finalists Hull, while Manchester United, Liverpool and Tottenham were all comfortable winners in the 3pm games. Despite not winning any of their previous six league games, this Merseyside punter had faith that Everton would see off Crystal Palace away from home, which they did courtesy of a Romelu Lukaku strike within 120 seconds of kick-off.
And so the bet rolled on to Sunday and Swansea’s ‘Dick Turpin’ job away to Southampton. Many punter would have been tempted to cash out with the clock ticking past 80 minutes, but this punter has admirable cajones. Shelvey’s winner meant a payout of more than £2,700 plus a bonus of £540 courtesy of Paddy Power’s Acca promotion.
The bet and the odds are in full below:
- Newcastle to beat Hull – 7/4
- Everton to beat Crystal Palace – 13/8
- Liverpool to beat West Ham – 4/6
- Man Utd to beat Leicester – 1/3
- Tottenham to beat West Brom – 8/5
- Swansea to beat Southampton – 11/2
It looks so easy with hindsight, doesn’t it?
