Blackburn v Liverpool: It’s make or break time for Rodgers now

Why a 100/1 punt can make your season and ruin Liverpools

by Paddy Power | April 8, 2015

Liverpool (4/6) take on Blackburn (4/1) tonight in Ewood Park in a game that both Brendan Rogers and Coutinho have claimed is now the make or break of their season. After losing at home to Manchester United and getting whopped away at Arsenal 4-1 Liverpool need a big performance to get back on track.

Blackburn are coming in off the back of four league wins from their last six including a 3-0 away win at Leeds United, but those two losses have come in their last two home games. Neither team has anything to play for in the league, but both sides will want to end the season on a high.

The pressure is on Liverpool. This season has been a disaster and they will want to send Gerrard away on a high. Unless he wants to be remembered for this… Sterling has rejected a new contract, looking for €2 million a week for his unique brand of amusing running and questionable end product;  Henderson is stalling like a twitchy learner driver; Gerrard is leaving and Champions League qualification is all but gone. The Anfield family look less together than your typical Jeremy Kyle Show fodder.

Liverpool will be without Gerrard, Martin Skrtel and Emre Can through suspension while Mario Balotelli is a doubt so there is some good news for Liverpool fans. Glen Johnson may be in line for a recall and as you can see some fans are less than enthusiastic… With Kolo Toure and Dejan Lovern coming in for Liverpool expect Jordan Rhodes to add to his 17 league goals this season.

Blackburn are stuck firmly in mid-table in the Championship and have had a disappointing League campaign never really challenging the top six and never having the thrill of the relegation mud-wrestle. Since going down in 2012 they haven’t threatened to go back up, but a win tonight would land a winnable semi-final against Aston Villa – it could become their best season since they somehow wangled £18 million for Roque Santa Cruz.

With 14 players missing or doubts for tonight Jordan Rhodes, is going to have to shoulder a lot of the responsibility in front of goal. Rhodes to score first and Blackburn to win 2-1 at 100/1 could set you up nicely for the weekend. If Rudy Gestede is passed fit to play expect him to prowling on the shoulder of Dejan Lovern like a hungry lion. He will be keen to add to his 18 goals this season and a Blackburn win with Gestede as an anytime scorer is at 12/1.

Sterling has come in for a lot of stick with Liverpool fans recently, but he’s still been their best player and biggest threat this season. Sterling to score first and a 2-0 win for Liverpool is at 25/1 and could be the safest bet. Jordan Henderson has four from his last six and is in fine form. An anytime punt is at 7/2 and with Liverpool to win is at 5/1.

It’s shit or get off the pot time for Liverpool. They needed silverware or top four this season and with top four a distant memory it now it all comes down to Ewood Park. Blackburn played well in Anfield last time out and with their home support pushing them on they have a great chance to cause a massive upset and royally screw Liverpool over in the process. Blackburn have the ability to pull this one out of the bag and I think they might just do it.
