Manchester Derby: Here is why your wallet wants you to back Manchester United

Manchester United face Manchester City on Sunday, and we dig into the Paddy Power betting book to find out which side is more beneficial to your bank balance

by Josh Powell | April 8, 2015

Your wallet is quite the magical character. Not only does it hold a bit of loose change and a few important cards, it has the air of mystery and uniqueness nobody else’s wallet can match. Only your wallet knows how it came to hold that random Argentine Peso despite you never setting foot in South America, and the story of why there’s a picture of Steve Guppy inside rather than your other half is one shrouded in mystery. Your wallet is always there when you need him, so it’s only fair to treat him every once in a while with a bundle of cash.

That’s why on Sunday, no matter whether your heart is saying United or City, your wallet wants you to back the reds in the Manchester derby.

As the above chart showed, if you had put £10 on Manchester United to win every week this season, and the same bet on Manchester City every week, the man who backed United would have a happier wallet. Currently you’d be up £7.00 if you had £10 on United every week, whereas you’d be down £26.70 if you’d made the same weekly bet on City.

This is however, only the second time all season that Louis van Gaal’s side have been profitable. In week 16 they beat Liverpool 3-0 at Old Trafford which gave them their sixth win on the spin and lifted them to a whopping 90p profit. Previously the Red Devils had hit a low of -£56.30 in week 10 after defeat in the Manchester derby left LVG’s men with just three wins from their opening 10 games.

But while Manchester United are on the up, Manuel Pellegrini’s City are plummeting to new depths. After a 3-1 win against West Brom in December gave City their seventh league win on the bounce, your wallet would have been showing a tidy profit of £34.60 for a £10 bet every week. However since then the Citizens have won just five of their 13 games and their returns have tumbled to -£26.70. In mid-March the two Manchester sides crossed for the first time as City’s 3-0 home win against the Baggies was sandwiched in-between defeats to Burnley and Crystal Palace, while Manchester United racked up successive wins against Tottenham, Liverpool and Aston Villa.

Your wallet would have been happier this season if you’d been backing Manchester United, and the home side are the 6/4 favourites to pick up another three points at Old Trafford and build on their profitability. Keep that wallet handy and it might even pipe up on Sunday with the idea of pizza and pints. What a hero.
