Grand National 2015: Why you’re more likely to back the winner if you’re from Newcastle, rather than from London

by Josh Powell | April 9, 2015

Everyone is looking for a Grand National tip, and most people will have their own opinions on who is going to get their nose in front in the world’s greatest steeplechase. But who should you be listening too? The man in the pub who has his nose deep in the form? The taxi driver who claims the fare before you was one of the main stable boys at a top secret yard? Your Nan, who despite her dementia, has an uncanny habit of plucking out a decent animal in the 40 runner field?

Well you should in fact be listening to anybody you know from Newcastle – and ignoring any Londoners in your life. The Paddy Power Blog have exclusively broken down last year’s Grand National results by region to bring you the best city to get your National tips from. For a second year in a row, the Geordies have come out on top, and going into Saturday’s big race they are the people you should be going to for tips.

The top five punting cities look like the below. Don’t hang around too long, get that Newcastle lad from your halls that you used to try to ignore at University on Facebook, make some awkward small talk and get his tip out of him. The Geordies’ record speaks for itself.

  1. Newcastle
  2. Glasgow
  3. Birmingham
  4. Cardiff
  5. Manchester

While the bottom five are as follows. If you are from these areas, or you know anyone else that is, please keep your tips to yourself. Don’t poison us with your terrible punting skills.

  1. London
  2. Cork
  3. Belfast
  4. Sunderland
  5. Edinburgh

Off course if you want top jockey Ruby Walsh’s tips, racing pundit Matt Chapman’s fancies, the latest National stats and trends or simply a lucky dip Sweepstake Kit, we have all that as well. But it might just be worth your while getting in touch with Ant and/or Dec on Twitter.
