At the top of the card of Saturday Nights UFC on Fox 15 in New Jersey Luke Rockhold and Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza staked their respective claims to be the next in line for a shot at Chris Weidman’s middleweight belt.
Rockhold picked up a performance of the night bonus for submitting former light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida with a rear naked choke in the second round. Souza submitted late replacement Chris Camozzi in the first round of their bout. Of the two Rockhold’s win was the more impressive and he looks the most likely choice to challenge for the title after Weidman faces Vitor Belfort on May 23rd.
Ovince St Preux will be thinking of title shots himself after he made it six from seven in the UFC with a second straight stoppage win. Here he is rocking Patrick Cummins with a short left before finishing the fight.
Fellow light heavyweight Gian Villante picked up a $50,000 Performance of the Night bonus for stopping Corey Anderson late in the third round. This is the punch that did all the damage, all but knocking Anderson out cold on his feet. With his faculties high-jacked and Villante going for the kill the ref stepped in to stop the fight shortly after this punch.
Elsewhere on the card 21-year old Paige VanZant comprehensively beat the veteran Felice Herrig in the women’s strawweight division over three rounds.
Max Holloway continued his climb up the featherweight ladder submitting another veteran in Cub Swanson for his sixth straight win since dropping a decision to Conor McGregor in August 2013.
Another of McGregor’s former victims, Diego Brandao, earned a stoppage victory over Jimmy Hettes in his first fight since losing to the Notorious.
