It’s very much the calm before the Punchestown Festival storm next week even if a certain AP McCoy is hanging up his saddle at Sandown.
All this blog needs to say about the champ is we will miss you – you legend!
Let’s start at Sandown with the juvenile handicap hurdle at 2pm. I tipped up Alzammaar at tasty odds when he won at Newbury last time – but I’m worried about this shorter trip.
Take a chance with BARON ALCO, who has done nothing in his last two starts but has dropped 11lb and is surely better than he is showing us. Gary Moore does well in these type of events and he might cause a shock.
We switch codes to the Flat for the 1m handicap at Haydock 2.20pm. The one to have a few quid on each-way is YOURARTISONFIRE.
He’s up 5lb for a recent win at Nottingham after a fine third at Doncaster. However, 3lb claimer Joey Haynes means he only carries 2lb extra and can run a big one one again.
I really like the look of old boy MENORAH in the Oaksey Chase over 2m6f (2.35pm). He will bounce off the surface and doesn’t face anything like the quality of Silviniaco Conti as he has done on his last two starts.
It’s the AP McCoy Celebration Chase at 3.15 and it’s make of break for SPRINTER SACRE. He’s still the top rated in this field, and if he can repeat any of his best form or a recent second at Ascot he will win. If not Nicky Henderson should retire him!
We end the day by taking a chance on with one-time Gold Cup hero BOBS WORTH (3.50pm). It’s been a while since he showed his best – but if the ground stays good it should be perfect for him in Saturday’s feature where Paddy’s paying the first 5 home.
If he’s ever going to return to form this is his chance off a mark of 158. It’s worth the risk or should I say – it’s Bobs Worth the risk.
So have a cracking weekend and get ready for Punchestown next week. Might even see you there. Yeeehaaa!
